Liam Eichenberg to Notre Dame: Fighting Irish Land 4-Star OT Prospect

Mike ChiariApr 19, 2015

After a fierce recruiting battle, Notre Dame prevailed Sunday, as it secured a commitment from coveted offensive tackle Liam Eichenberg.

Tom Loy of 247Sports reported the news and provided comments from Eichenberg, who spoke about his decision:

"

Coach Hiestand is very particular with his coaching technique. He's just different. I love it. His coaching style is great. We were breaking down my film in the film room and I learned so much from what he was telling me. He was saying that I have a really good punch. He said that I need to do a better job with my hands when kicking back far and I need to work on pointing my feet the right way. I've never been told that, but it made sense.

Eichenberg, a 4-star prospect, is listed as the No. 11 offensive tackle and the No. 83 overall player in the Class of 2016 by 247Sports' composite rankings.

The Saint Ignatius High School standout from Cleveland is a physical specimen at 6'6" and 290 pounds, and he is well worth the hype in the estimation of CBS Sports Network recruiting expert Tom Lemming:

Eichenberg had no shortage of intriguing options on the table, but he was ultimately able to whittle the field down to just two schools.

According to Loy, Eichenberg considered both Notre Dame and Ohio State before making his final decision.

The budding star made visits to each university and certainly seemed to do his due diligence, per Loy:

"

I just want to spend some time with the players and the coaches [at Notre Dame]. My main focus this weekend is to look at the depth chart with [offensive line] coach [Harry] Hiestand and see where I would fit in if I were to end up there. I want to see what it would be like as a student-athlete if I were to end up at Notre Dame. I've been there a lot, so it's nothing new, but I do want to see where I would fit in on the field as a freshman.

"

There were plenty of factors to take into account, including academics, teammates, coaching, winning atmosphere and immediate playing time.

Eichenberg mentioned the possibility of playing as a freshman, and while that is far from a sure thing, it very well could have had a major influence on his college choice.

The big Ohioan has the size and the skill set to be an elite lineman at the collegiate level, and whether it happens as a freshman or further down the line, there is a ton of excitement surrounding his commitment.
