Manchester United Transfer News: Memphis Depay Deal Nears, Dani Alves Rumours

Nick AkermanApr 9, 2015

PSV Eindhoven director Marcel Brands has confirmed Memphis Depay is receiving interest from some of the "best" clubs in Europe and is almost certain to depart at the end of the season.

Linked strongly with Manchester United, reported by Anthony Hay of the MailOnline, this suggestion is likely to capture the attention of manager Louis van Gaal, who has an excellent working relationship with the player. Brands expects Depay to leave the Netherlands, but gives little away when suggesting which club is leading the race for his signature, per Hay:

"

The chances are very high that he leaves. If you see what clubs are enquiring about him, they really are the best in Europe. When I talk for PSV I would say he is not ready and should continue here for another year. But I am realistic and if I worked at a big European club, I’d buy him without question.

With a heavy heart (we would let him go), because a great player and a great guy leaves. But we are also proud that a boy from the academy is going to make such a step.

Depay's rapid rise to prominence has already seen him fulfil a number of roles for club and country. While Netherlands boss, Van Gaal utilised him just ahead of his back three at the World Cup. The 21-year-old showed himself to be capable of carrying out the responsible duty of supporting all phases of play without losing his goalscoring touch.

This season at PSV, Depay has highlighted his prowess in front of goal. He is currently the Eredivisie's top scorer with 19 strikes in 25 appearances, per Sky Sports. Despite two losses in their last six matches, PSV are 10 points clear of rivals Ajax as the season comes to a close.

Football writer Elko Born previously summarised Depay's relationship with Van Gaal:

Pace and attacking incision are likely to be on the United manager's wishlist during the summer. News of Barcelona right-back Dani Alves rejecting a contract extension is doing the rounds after his agent and ex-wife suggested the Blaugrana's offer was insulting to the player. Alves is linked to United by Dan Ripley of the MailOnline.

"The negotiations are over," said Dinorah Santana, who confirmed Alves has turned down a three-year deal which specifies the player only needs to take part in 60 percent of matches, reported by Paul Hirst of the Associated Press (h/t the Daily Mail).

"If they say this is the final offer, then they (negotiations) are over," continued Santana. "It doesn't make sense. It's very hard that we get to April and Barcelona haven't thought about renewing Dani's contract. Dani is sad."

B/R UK tweeted an Instagram post from Alves:

Van Gaal has utilised Antonio Valencia and Paddy McNair at right-back this season, largely overlooking Rafael. Alves' quality outshines all three and could allow Valencia to move further up the pitch. His arrival would also provide McNair time to continue developing without the pressure of needing to be United's next homegrown star, but Rafael will be looking over his shoulder.

B/R UK's Ryan Bailey and Matteo Bonetti recently discussed exactly which signings United need to become title contenders next season:

United's play has largely been lacking excitement and tempo over the last two seasons, something Van Gaal has started to address across the last month. However, a handful of top-quality signings are needed to continue moving the club in the right direction.

Depay and Alves would be welcomed with open arms. They are highly entertaining players and stars who can be used in multi-functional roles. While United's current squad is on the brink of qualifying for the Champions League, such additions are needed to make this an easier occurrence next season.
