Johan Santana's Season-Ending Surgery Caps New York Mets' Debbie Downer Season
Update to the original article: According to Adam “I Want Tony Bernazard’s Job” Rubin of the New York Daily News, Johan Santana will have season-ending surgery to remove bone chips in his left elbow.
The good news is that Santana’s 2010 season is not in jeopardy. Santana should be ready to go for Spring Training.
I guess this is good news for Mets fans, right?
I know it’s trendy right now to pick on the New York Mets because they have become such an easy target. I will be the first to admit, I have piled on myself. However, there is news coming out of New York tonight that is no laughing matter.
According to MLB.com, several Mets players believe that ace Johan Santana will need surgery on his pitching elbow. The Mets have scratched Santana from his start on Tuesday and instead will see a specialist.
In the season of impossible to believe for the Mets, this news might take the cake.
Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey said, “I don’t think anyone expects good news.” Way to be optimistic Mike. You can now try out for the role of Debbie Downer on Saturday Night Live.
Even if Santana gets good news, I don’t expect the former Cy Young award winner to pitch again this season. The Mets’ season is over and, at this point, it doesn’t make sense for Santana to pitch and risk further injury.
If there is something seriously wrong with Santana’s elbow, then the Mets will be in serious trouble in 2010. Of course, the first thing people think of when they hear elbow problem is Tommy John surgery. Hopefully for the entire Mets organization and their fans, this won’t be the case.
With the Billy Wagner trade deadline set for tomorrow at 1:00 pm, and now with this Santana injury, there will be a lot of Mets news tomorrow.
As wil any big story in baseball, The Ghost of Moonlight Graham will have updates as these stories break.
