Super-Good: Dustin "McLovin" Hazelett to Return at UFC 106

Tim BockAug 25, 2009

The UFC has added another solid bout to the hotly anticipated UFC 106 card as returning welterweights Dustin "McLovin" Hazelett and Karo Parisyan will battle it out on the televised portion of the event. Hazelett is coming off a torn ACL that he suffered while training for a scheduled fight with Ben Saunders at UFC 96, while Parisyan hasn’t fought since he was suspended for testing positive for painkillers after his contest with Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 94.

The 23-year-old Hazelett is one of the best welterweight prospects in the UFC, coming off impressive submission victories over Josh Burkman and Tamdam McCrory. He won “Submission of the Night” for both contests.  The Jorge Gurgel trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt combines a BJJ game that he uses as well as anyone in the Octagon with striking that seems to improve each time he fights. He has a 5-2 record in the UFC, and a 12-4 record overall.

Meanwhile, Parisyan has been derailed by injuries, suspensions, and uneven performances in the Octagon. He was on track to receive a title shot against Matt Hughes in 2006, but an injury forced him out of the bout. He’s been struggling to get back in the title picture ever since. His UFC career includes victories over Nick Diaz, Nick Thompson, Chris Lytle, and Matt Serra, and losses to Thiago Alves and Diego Sanchez.

After the loss to Alves in early 2008, Parisyan didn’t compete again until he faced Kim at UFC 94 in January. Parisyan won the lackluster fight via split decision, but had the result overturned when he tested positive for painkillers after the contest. He was suspended for six months and fined $32,000.

UFC 106 also features a heavyweight title contest between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, as well as a light heavyweight fight between Tito Ortiz and Mark Coleman. The event takes place on November 21st in Las Vegas, Nevada.
