Andrea Dossena, formerly of Liverpool, has been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting in Harrods, one of the world's best-known department stores.

The 33-year-old, who has represented Italy 10 times and is now at Leyton Orient, was bailed along with a 31-year-old—reportedly his girlfriend.

The Liverpool Echo reports a Metropolitan Police spokesman:

Police arrested a 33-year-old male and a 31-year-old woman on April 7 on suspicion of shoplifting at Harrods.

They were taken to a west London police station.

Both the man and woman have been bailed to a date in late April, pending further enquiries.

"

A subsequent quote from his agent indicated that Dossena's young son had picked up a book and put it in his bag without his parents' knowledge:

"

It was a family shopping trip to Harrods and their little boy was carrying his own bag.

He put a kids’ book in there and it set the security alarms off as they left the shop.

Andrea and his wife didn’t have any ID with them so they had to go to the police station just to verify who they were.

"

However, that story was later contradicted by Dossena himself, who explained what actually happened.

He said, as per the Guardian

"

I was in Harrods with my wife and my son for some shopping and I forgot to pay a honey jar and some sliced meats we had previously ordered. While exiting the shop unaware of my oversight, I was stopped by security guards [who] then called the police as a standard routine procedure.

As I wasn’t carrying with me any identity documents at the time, I was asked to go to the nearest police station in order to be identified after which I left and went back home. Hence, I have now instructed my lawyers to protect my image with all necessary legal actions against those who reported this inaccurate and tendentious news.

"

Dossena has also played for Sunderland in English football as well as several Italian clubs, including Napoli.
