Calling True or False on 5 Recent Manchester United Transfer Rumours

Rob DawsonApr 7, 2015

As the season draws to a close and the summer transfer window gets nearer and nearer, the stories about Manchester United's potential business will increase.

It's only April, but United are being linked with different players every day. Louis van Gaal is expected to strengthen his squad ahead of next season with the aim of mounting a credible challenge for the Premier League title.

Here are five players who have been linked with a summer move to Old Trafford and predictions as to whether each deal is likely to happen or not.

Information obtained firsthand.

Mats Hummels

1 of 5

Louis van Gaal has been keen to bring a ball-playing centre-half to United since he arrived at Old Trafford. Mats Hummels was a target last summer, but with Robert Lewandowski already set for Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund didn't want to lose two star names in the same window.

Van Gaal still needs another centre-back, and it's likely United will try to persuade Dortmund to part with the 26-year-old at the end of the season.

Verdict: True

Memphis Depay

2 of 5

Like Hummels, Memphis Depay has been linked with a move to United since last summer, according to the Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst.

Van Gaal, who took him to the World Cup in Brazil, is clearly a fan, but there was a feeling at Old Trafford that the 20-year-old would be better offer spending another season at PSV Eindhoven.

Now that he's a year older and catching the attention of Europe's top clubs, it'll be up to United to decide whether it's the right time to make their move.

Verdict: True

Nigel de Jong

3 of 5

It's easy to see why Nigel de Jong has been consistently linked with a transfer to United, as reported by Luckhurst.

United need a central midfielder, and Van Gaal knows De Jong well from their time together with the Netherlands. De Jong also has plenty of Premier League experience after his spell at Manchester City.

However, United were clear in their stance last summer that De Jong wasn't on their list of targets, and there's no reason why that should have changed.

Verdict: False

Kevin Strootman

4 of 5

Van Gaal might have bid for Roma's Kevin Strootman last summer if the midfielder hadn't still been recovering from the knee injury that ruled him out of the World Cup.

He's the United manager's main midfield target, according to the Manchester Evening News' James Robson, but Van Gaal will want to make sure the 25-year-old can get back to full fitness before sanctioning the offer it would take to lure him away from Rome.

Verdict: True

Fabio Coentrao

5 of 5

Fabio Coentrao came close to signing for United under David Moyes and has hinted at a move to Old Trafford ahead of the summer window, according to the Daily Mail's Daniel Prescott. It made sense for Moyes to target the Real Madrid defender because of his doubts over Patrice Evra.

But Van Gaal has already signed Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo—all three of whom can play at left-back. He has more pressing issues than chasing another.

Verdict: False
