Tony Romo Promised a Super Bowl Win If Jahlil Okafor Won National Championship

Dan CarsonApr 7, 2015

Thanks to a previously agreed upon arrangement with Jahlil Okafor, Tony Romo is in a bit of a pickle.

A longtime Duke basketball supporter, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback was at Lucas Oil Stadium on Monday night to watch his Blue Devils down the Wisconsin Badgers 68-63 in the NCAA national championship game.

Romo celebrated the program's fifth national championship, but the thrill of victory comes with a price tag for the quarterback, who allegedly made a promise to Okafor before Duke’s star freshman center ever laced up for the team.

In the spirit of holding Romo to his word, Sporting News’ Caroline Sikes dug up an Instagram picture Okafor posted in early 2014. The image shows a yet-to-be-champion Okafor posing alongside Romo with a caption outlining their agreement: an NCAA championship for a Super Bowl.

“Selfie with Tony Romo last night at the Duke game. Said he’s apart of the Duke fam too. Our deal is for me to win a national championship next year and for him to win the Super Bowl. #Duke #Cowboys #ItsJustDifferent.”

Welp. Looks like Romo has his work cut out for him.

Down one DeMarco Murray and plus one Greg Hardy, the Cowboys may or may not have lost ground in the busy NFL offseason. They could have the magic to replicate 2014's strong regular-season performance, but as always, it's the playoffs that loom like a Bermuda Triangle for a franchise that hasn’t been able to successfully navigate the postseason in decades.

Good luck with that, Romo. The kid did his part and showed up at the end of the game. Now it’s your turn.

Dan is on Twitter. He does not envy Romo.
