Kevin Owens Should End Sami Zayn's NXT Career in Return Feud

Donald WoodApr 9, 2015

Since making his presence felt in his debut at NXT by turning on Sami Zayn and setting his sights on the world title, champion Kevin Owens has been booked as one of the most destructive forces in the company.

Owens was temporarily derailed by a knee injury that has kept him out for several weeks, but when he does make his inevitable return, his eyes must be dead set on taking down Zayn once and for all.

The NXT champion must end Zayn’s NXT career.

The history between the two men makes Owens the only viable option to send Zayn away from the fans of NXT. The two men were best friends for almost 15 years before Owens decided the world title was more important than Zayn, and he brutalized the champion until he took the belt.

Not only did Zayn and Owens have a true friendship before ever signing with WWE, but the storylines they also already built in NXT make them arguably the best feud the minor league system has ever seen.

The key here is that Zayn is ready for the jump to the main roster, and getting the rub from his departure now would be no different than when Owens—then known as Kevin Steen—sent Zayn—then known as El Generico—out of Ring of Honor and into a WWE contract. The two men have been linked their entire careers, and Owens putting an end to the magical run of Zayn in NXT would be almost poetic.

Owens is still fairly new to the WWE style. While it is clear that he understands in-ring psychology and style better than most wrestlers already on the roster, a few more months in the minor leagues will have him fully prepared for a big impact on the main roster.

On the other hand, Zayn has the stage set for him by Kalisto and Neville, who have successfully made the jump thus far and shown why there is so much excitement around the product. The crowd is ready for a star like Zayn, and it should only be a matter of time before he is called up.

Since Owens would likely be staying in NXT, the heel reaction the champion would get sending Zayn away forever would be unparalleled. Owens would be one of the most hated heels in NXT history.

Ending Zayn’s career in NXT would also leave the championship scene wide open. Owens has been out injured, and a series of matches against top stars like Finn Balor and Hideo Itami would ease the blow of losing Zayn.

Regardless of when it happens, Owens must be the one who ends Zayn’s NXT career.
