Hundley Comments on Draft Status

Thursday, April 16

Speaking on Gruden's QB Camp, Hundley stated he believes he should be considered in the same tier of signal-callers as Winston and Mariota, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:

"

I think I’ve done enough to put my name in that conversation. I think that’s something that’s always going to be a chip on my shoulder. They may not say I’m in the conversation with Mariota and Jameis — and I respect them to death, they’re great friends of mine — but at the same time, I know I can put my talents against theirs. I feel confident in being able to do that.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller discusses the best pro player comparison for Hundley:

Hundley Reportedly Set to Meet with Texans

Monday, April 6

Rapoport noted that Hundley was in Houston for a predraft visit with the Texans.

The Texans are one of a number of teams that could use more depth at the quarterback position, so this doesn't come as much of a surprise since Mariota and Winston could very well be off the board within the first few picks. Hundley may be an option for Houston in the second round, especially if it shores up the wide receiver position in the first.

Hundley threw for 3,155 yards and 22 touchdowns last season at UCLA and added 644 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. He is the type of dual-threat quarterback who could take some of the pressure off running back Arian Foster in the Houston backfield and force linebackers to stay close to the line of scrimmage to account for his running ability.

That could open up receivers for underneath routes.

Rob Rang of CBSSports.com pointed out that Hundley made some significant strides as a potential NFL quarterback this season, especially in a bowl victory over Kansas State:

"

The NFL, however, has consistently humbled scrambling quarterbacks who can't throw accurately from the pocket. As such, Hundley's development in this area is critical.

Fortunately, Hundley did show improved patience in the pocket this season. Here's a clip demonstrating Hundley stepping up and delivering a nice pass for a first down against the Wildcats, for example. Other than Friday night's Alamo Bowl victory to cap his career, Hundley showed improved instincts as a passer in a big road win at Arizona State and in the rivalry game victory against Southern Cal.

The well-built Hundley is a graceful runner, with a combination of agility, acceleration and beautiful touch on the deep ball that reminds me of a young Randall Cunningham. He has a smooth, over-the-top delivery and the ball explodes out of his hand.

"

Houston could certainly find some room for a quarterback like that on the depth chart.

Though he may not be as polished as Winston and Mariota, Hundley does offer some upside for teams that might be willing and able to be patient with his development.
