NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament 2015: Final Bracket Before Title Game

R. Cory SmithApr 7, 2015

There is still one game remaining in the college basketball season. When UConn and Notre Dame meet up in a rematch of last season's national championship game, the two powerhouse programs will be looking to add to their already illustrious history.

Muffet McGraw leads Notre Dame back into the championship game against Geno Auriemma, her fiercest rival. The two teams have a history against one another, with UConn winning last year's title over the Irish.

In fact, Auriemma has always come out on top when playing in the final game of the year, via Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated:

McGraw, meanwhile, has been the runner-up in three of the last four seasons with one national title from 2001. The Irish dominated the ACC this season and have torched through the NCAA tournament. But will they be enough to take down UConn?

UConn is a juggernaut. Notre Dame is far from David to the Huskies' Goliath. For anyone who thinks the women's college basketball game is monotonous because of only a handful of teams constantly dominating, this game is for you.

While Auriemma's success at this point paints a certain picture of how this game will end, Notre Dame has thrived against UConn in the past. ESPN Stats & Info notes that the recent record is deceiving when looking at the Notre Dame-UConn rivalry:

Both teams feature familiar stars from last year's matchup. Breanna Stewart has been phenomenal during her first three years with two national championships already. The 6'4" forward is one of the most versatile players in the country but will have her hands full with Jewell Loyd.

At only 5'10", Loyd has blistered opponents all season with 20 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. The junior leader has a talented young cast around her with Brianna Turner and Lindsay Allen, but she's been the obvious star in the NCAA tournament.

Loyd also doesn't back down from a challenge such as UConn. She spoke about facing the tall task of taking on the Huskies, via NCAA Women's Basketball:

The Irish's only home loss this season was against the Huskies. Notre Dame's 22 straight wins are only bested by UConn's 34-game streak. Regardless of the outcome, Tuesday's matchup promises to be another memorable showdown between the best programs in the country.
