Manchester United Transfer News: Sami Khedira Offer, William Carvalho Rumours

Tom SunderlandApr 6, 2015

Latest reports suggest Sami Khedira has been offered to Manchester United on a free transfer this summer, but Louis van Gaal's side look interested in Sporting Lisbon's William Carvalho after scouting the midfielder again.

According to the Daily Star (h/t the Independent's Simon Rice), United can have Real Madrid's Germany international if they're willing to fork out wages of £200,000 a week.

Van Gaal's side have long been crying out for a tough-tackling presence at their core, but the financial constraints linked to Khedira's deal may not be seen as all that appealing.

Khedira has already made it clear he intends to leave the Bernabeu when his contract expires this summer, quoted by Alvaro De La Rosa of Spanish newspaper AS as saying: "It is not a decision against the club. I want to find new stimulation for my career and to continue growing."

Schalke have been linked as one of the frontrunners in the race to sign the World Cup winner, and a return to his native Bundesliga may be the preferred option.

However, Norwegian pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft claims Khedira wishes to see what offers arise from the English top flight before agreeing a move back to Germany:

No transfer sum means the Red Devils are saving a substantial amount if they are to go after Khedira, but his astronomical salary demands would make him one of the team's best-paid players were he to join.

Manchester United may still have a raft of other midfield options next season, too, with Bleacher Report's Alex Dimond recently suggesting that no players are set to leave the engine room:

Ander Herrera's rise to form of late has been a pleasant change at Old Trafford, while Daley Blind is gradually cementing himself as a consistent staple in Van Gaal's side.

Nevertheless, the club may still wish to pursue the midfield general they've been pining after for so long this summer, having now learned just what—or how much—it will take to recruit Khedira.

Red Devils Researching William Carvalho

Another target who could improve Van Gaal's central core is Sporting's Carvalho, who was this week subject of more scouting from the Red Devils.

The English titans have been associated with Carvalho since long before Van Gaal's arrival at the helm, and Portuguese newspaper A Bola (h/t Metro's Louis Sealey) says representatives were once more on hand this past weekend.

Carvalho played the full 90 minutes as his side clinched a 1-1 draw at Pacos Ferreira, with Metro's report claiming United are interested in cutting a £22 million deal.

Manchester United winger Nani is currently on loan with Sporting and is quoted by the Daily Mail's Mike Keegan as saying Carvalho would make for a good fit at Old Trafford:

Carvalho also fits the midfield general description the Red Devils are seeking, although the Portugal international perhaps bases more of his play on the physical side than Khedira.

That being said, with the passing minds of Herrera, Blind and Michael Carrick surrounding, it may not be such a terrible idea to have one more brutish asset among Van Gaal's options.

Turning 23 this week, Carvalho also boasts a wealth of potential and longevity compared to some of United's other summer targets, a mind fit for moulding by would-be boss Van Gaal.

Having helped Sporting return to the Primeira Liga hierarchy in recent seasons, United may now have seen all they need of Carvalho to decide whether or not he's made for Manchester.
