NCAA Women's Basketball Bracket 2015: Matchups and Predictions for Semifinals

Brian MaziqueApr 4, 2015

Either there's very little parity in women's college basketball this year, or the selection committee is filled with geniuses. Perhaps it's a little bit of both.

The 2015 Women's NCAA Final Four features all No. 1 seeds. Beginning Sunday, April 5, the Connecticut Huskies, Maryland Terrapins, Notre Dame fighting Irish and South Carolina Gamecocks will do battle to call themselves national champions.

An updated bracket for the women's tournament can be found here.

ESPN PR has the matchups:

The Huskies and head coach Geno Auriemma are two wins away from their third straight women's national championship. It would be Auriemma's 10th with the school. The Huskies have yet to be tested in the tournament. The closest any team has come to challenging them came in the Elite Eight matchup against the Dayton Flyers.

Even that game was decided by 21 points. The Flyers had managed to upset the second- and third-seeded teams in the region, but the Lady Huskies proved to be Cinderella-proof.

On Sunday, UConn will take on Maryland. The Terps' path to Tampa, Florida, has been a little more difficult, but no opponent has stayed closer than 10 points through the first four games. Can the Terps knock off Auriemma's latest juggernaut?

No.

UConn's frontcourt is simply too strong. Against Dayton, the trio of Morgan Tuck, Breanna Stewart and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis combined for 73 points and 29 rebounds. The Flyers scored just 70 points as a team. When they are clicking, the Lady Huskies are nearly impossible to beat.

Auriemma's ladies would have probably loved to have an opportunity to avenge their only loss of the season against the Stanford Lady Cardinal in the national championship, but they will have to settle for a battle with Notre Dame.

The Lady Irish Will Take Down South Carolina

Notre Dame knocked off Stanford in the Sweet 16 and beat the Baylor Bears in the Elite Eight to advance to the Final Four. In their semifinal matchup, the Lady Irish will take on the South Carolina Gamecocks. Similar to the other side of the bracket, Notre Dame's path has been fairly easy, while South Carolina has had to endure a few stiff tests along the way.

The Lady Gamecocks beat the North Carolina Tar Heels by two and bested the Florida State Seminoles by six in the Elite Eight. Nevertheless, the Lady Gamecocks have their shot to advance to the national championship game.

For South Carolina to have a chance to pull the upset, star guard Tiffany Mitchell has to get more help carrying the scoring load. She carried the offense against Florida State and led the charge back from a three-point deficit at the half.

Against Notre Dame, South Carolina must have formidable second and third options. The Lady Irish rebound and defend the paint too well to allow one primary offensive threat to beat them. Look for Notre Dame to pull away in the second half to punch their ticket to the title game .
