Jarred Cosart Cleared of Betting on Baseball, Fined for Gambling on Other Sports

After an MLB investigation into the gambling habits of Miami Marlins pitcher Jarred Cosart, the 24-year-old hurler was cleared of betting on baseball.

According to a statement released by MLB Communications on Twitter, Cosart will be fined for betting on other sports with the use of illegal bookmakers:

Cosart's case first became public on March 26, when it was reported by Tim Elfrink of the Miami New Times that he was being investigated by Major League Baseball. That came on the heels of Cosart's Twitter account engaging in gambling talk with another account.

Following MLB's decision, Cosart released a statement of his own and declared his innocence regarding betting on baseball, per MLB.com's Joe Frisaro:

With the book now closed on Cosart's case, all signs point toward him being able to move forward and focus on pitching for the Marlins.

Cosart is coming off a season that saw him go 13-11 with a 3.69 ERA between the Marlins and Houston Astros. He is expected to be part of Miami's starting rotation, and he no longer has the threat of a potential suspension hanging over his head.

A gambling scandal is the last thing the league needed, considering Pete Rose's situation, so all parties are likely relieved that the matter has been resolved.
