Ben Simmons Gets Crossed Out of His Jock by Fellow 5-Star Derryck Thornton
Ben Simmons is probably going to take over college basketball next year.
The native Australian playing for Montverde Academy in Florida is the No. 1 high school player in the nation. He's a rangy athlete and multitool player—a guy who'll probably board a plane for the NBA draft the moment his collegiate layover at LSU is over next year.
But that's in the future, and we're in the present—a present where Simmons just got crossed out of his ever-loving briefs.
The 6'8" McDonald's All-American and his Montverde team are playing in the second round of the Dick's Sporting Goods High School Nationals this Friday afternoon. Their opposition is a tough Findlay Prep team with another 5-star talent in point guard Derryck Thornton.
It's a battle of blue chippers, and, well, Thornton appears to be holding his own against America's top-rated high school baller. The 6'2" guard faced up on Simmons in the first half and hit the Aussie with a crossover that left him suffering from a severe case of linguine legs.
JMBV's Justin Mages posted video of the carnage. It was all over too quickly.
Fortunately for Simmons, Thornton missed the bucket and saved him from Chris Paul levels of memery. Later in the game, Simmons would assuage some of his dented pride with a foolishly good behind-the-back pass to a teammate in transition (Vine via @Olgun).
You win some, you lose some. Sometimes you're the poster—others you're the postee. That's just what happens when you play with the best.
Dan is on Twitter. He just ran out of the gym screaming.
