The Portugal international had to return from international duty due to persistent pain which had started after El Clasico, and on April 1, tests revealed an injury to the vastus internus muscle, per Los Blancos' official Twitter account:
As reported by Marca's Juan Ignacio Garcia-Ochoa, Pepe couldn't feature for Portugal against Serbia before returning to Madrid, and when he continued complaining about pain before the next training session, Los Blancos' medical staff grew concerned.
France international Raphael Varane has filled in for the 32-year-old during his absence.
