MMA in New York: Assembling the Perfect Madison Square Garden UFC Card

Dan HiergesellApr 1, 2015

Mixed martial arts is currently roasting in New York's proverbial oven.

Cooking at optimal temperature, the combat casserole has been taking form before our very own eyes.

But it will take time for New York's big-city broiler to heat this bundle of unprecedented greatness to its absolute core.

I guess it's one of those things that will taste better because you waited for it.

In any case, MMA in NYC is inevitable, especially considering fight fans will gather by the masses to consume it.

They will flock by the thousands to witness MMA's magnificent unveiling at the famous Madison Square Garden, which stands tall as the city's unparalleled dinner table.

Without biting off more than we can chew, here is the perfect UFC card to serve as MSG's main course.

Holly Holm vs. Amanda Nunes

1 of 5

Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes represent two of the best strikers the UFC women's bantamweight division has to offer.

Fueled by aggressive offensive outbursts and pinpoint combinations, both women are capable of dissecting their opponents.

A matchup between the two rising contenders could shed light on a division consistently overshadowed by the popularity and productivity of its champion, Ronda Rousey.

Holm poses a bigger threat due to sensational patience and technique, but Nunes' power and brutality makes her an extremely dangerous out.

Carlos Condit vs. Matt Brown

2 of 5

Once upon a time in a land far, far away, welterweight standouts Carlos Condit and Matt Brown were scheduled to brawl.

Their infectous appetite for violence was due to burst inside of the Octagon like an exploding supernova.

But as bad luck would have it, the always untimely UFC injury bug struck with disatisfying vengenance, knocking The Immortal out of an important divisional showdown with The Natural Born Killer at UFC on Fox 9 back in 2013.

It remains one of the more disappointing cancellations in recent memory and a remarkable re-book that has the gritty potential to steal Fight of the Night honors on such a momentous occasion.

Junior Dos Santos vs. Alistair Overeem

3 of 5

What kind of UFC card would this be without at least one heavyweight collision?

Add in the aged beef between former UFC champion Junior Dos Santos and revitalized top contender Alistair Overeem, and you have yourself a true main card matchup worthy of big-city attention.

While JDS commands the upper hand based on his knockout power alone, The Reem's evolving striking and calculated approach even the playing field immensely.

The winner would most likely earn a heavyweight title shot and lifelong bragging rights.

Ronda Rousey vs. Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino

4 of 5

Maybe besides Brock Lesnar vs. his weight in ferrets, there's no other fight fans would rather see than a women's bantamweight title match between champion Ronda Rousey and archrival Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino.

Assuming Rousey is able to maintain her undefeated streak leading into such a showdown, this may forever be remembered as the most important fight in women's MMA history.

The only issue is Cyborg's ability to successfully cut weight, maintain her innate striking power and formulate a perfected game plan strong enough to outlast the champ's menacing unpredictability.

If those stars can align, we may all fall witness to MMA's version of Muhammed Ali vs. Joe Frazier.

Jon Jones vs. Chris Weidman

5 of 5

Like a shooting star falling in the night sky, superfights don't come around all too often.

While a cross-divisional meeting between current UFC champions Chris Weidman and Jon Jones would serve as such a celestial phenomenon, two things need to happen for these New York natives to lock horns.

Jones must inevtiably knock off powerhouse Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at UFC 187, and Weidman must dispose of MMA legend Vitor Belfort on the same night.

In addition, bags of cash would have to fall from New York City's skyline in order to make this fight appealing to both men.
