Summer Olympics Schedule 2016: Dates, Times, Daily Events Named for Rio Games

Clear your 2016 calendars now because Tuesday marked the release of the complete Rio Summer Olympics competition schedule.  

Nick Zaccardi of NBC Sports passed along the news and a detailed breakdown of the entire schedule, with information from Rio2016.com.

Among the highlights is the opening ceremony, which will take place Friday, Aug. 5 at the Maracana and features the final torchbearer and the lighting of the Olympic cauldron. It is appointment viewing for even the most casual fans of the Olympic Games, and it is almost always a spectacle.

Elsewhere, the always popular gymnastics and swimming competitions get underway the next day on Saturday, Aug. 6. The men’s team final for gymnastics is Monday, Aug. 8, the women’s team final is Tuesday, Aug. 9, the men’s all-around final is Wednesday, Aug. 10, and the women’s all-around final is Thursday, Aug. 11.

The second week of competition will be highlighted by the track and field events, including the women’s 100m final Saturday, Aug. 13 and the men’s 100m final Sunday, Aug. 14.

The women’s basketball final will be Saturday, Aug. 20, while the men’s final will be Sunday, Aug. 21.

The closing ceremony is also set for Sunday, Aug. 21, when the Olympic cauldron will be extinguished at the Maracana.
