Big Red Bird Droppings: Notes From The Cardinals Nest

Who's Number Two? Matt Leinart didn't come in to the game until there were just over 8 minutes on the clock. He led a nice 13 play drive down the field that started at the Cards 1 yard line. He completed 3 of his first 4 passes to get the ball to midfield, including a sweet 25 yarder from under the shadow of the goalpost on his first pass. It culminated in a nice 88 yard drive that ended at the Chargers 13, when 3 straight balls fell incomplete.

Leinart stayed ahead in the quest for the backup QB spot. St Peirre not only threw that 2nd quarter pick at the goalline, but only completed 6 of 15 passes for 69 yards in his 4 opportunities.

Forth Wheel: Stephens-Howling was told by the coaching staff during May mini camps that his best way to secure a spot on the roster was to shine on special teams. He did that in Flagstaff, and he did that against the Chargers. Now he leaves coach Ken Whizenhunt with a decision of whether to carry 4 runningbacks or not. There's Hightower, of course, and his projected backup in rookie 1st round pick Beanie Wells. Then there's off-season acquisition FA Jason Wright. The next couple weeks will be interesting indeed.

Chris Cross: Oh, and Beanie didn't play again. Expect to see him on the field next week against the Packers at home. Or expect to see a pissed off, or at least irritated, coach Whiz.

Injury Bug: Seven Cardinals didn't play because of various injuries. They include Wells, starters WR Steve Breaston and CB Bryant McFdden, along with WR michael Ray Garvin, OT Elliot Vallejo, LB Ali Highsmith, and DT Kellen Dykes. Wells, Breastion, and McFadden are all expected to practice this week.
