2009 MLB Draft and Signing Grades

Bill MckillopAug 20, 2009

The 2009 MLB Draft and Signing are now complete and its time to pass out the final Grades. We have covered the big winners and big losers now we will cover all the teams. I view the draft as a way a team can exclusively get players for the future and control that players contract rights. Now all draft picks may not turn into professional baseball players , but they all have some value.

Top to Bottom based on Draft and Signing Grade

Winners

Diamondbacks 37 signed 18 unsigned

Grade A+
Rockies  39 signed 13 unsigned

Grade A+
Cardinals 44 signed 6  unsigned

Grade A

Florida   34 signed 16 unsigned - Only 2 of the teams top 35 picks go unsigned. That’s is some efficient work and we know the Marlins can develop.

Grade  A-

Brewers  32 signed 21 unsigned    -  Signed all the teams top 20 picks they drafted and they been doing well in the draft as of late.

Grade  A-

Astros  35 signed 16 unsigned  – Only left 5 of the team’s top 35 picks unsigned.  Once is a fluke and twice is a trend so keep it up.

Grade  B+

Padres  38 signed 12 unsigned - 5 unsigned in the top 35 picks but three were in the top 20. Good Draft for a team who needs players.

Grade  B+

Giants  37 signed 14 unsigned - four of the teams top 23 picks were left unsigned bust still got lots of players under contract.

Grade  B+

Phillies 34 SIGNED 15 UNSIGNED  - 3 of the teams top 30 picks were unsigned but still had a strong draft..

Grade  B+

White Soxs 39 signed 13 unsigned - 5 picks in the teams top 20 were unsigned including a 3 round selection, signed most of its targeted players.

Grade  B

Dodgers  31 signed 20 unsigned  -  failed to sign 4 of its top 25 picks in the draft but overall signed most of its picks.

Grade  B
Nationals  33 signed 24 unsigned  - Got Strasburg and signed all of but 3 of the teams top 25 picks. The team needs lots of help could of signed more picks but seems to be a good class.

Grade  B
Mets     35 signed 17 unsigned  - failed to sign 5th, 6th, and 15th rounder and they were all pitchers but overall was a good draft.

Grade  B
Seattle  35 signed 17 unsigned  - Didn’t sign rounds 14-17 and left too many players unsigned but still should produce fruit.

Grade  B
Blue Jays 33 signed 19 unsigned  -  Toronto needed to sign its Late 1st rounder and its 2nd and 3 rounder. If the team is going to go younger you have to sign the picks.

Grade  B

Royals  31 Signed  18 unsigned  - Failed to sign 12th pick overall after the same pick did not sign last year with the Nationals.

Grade  B-
Reds  33 signed 18 unsigned  -  The Reds don’t spend big money so signing picks and development is the lifeblood of the team. They could of did better in the middle rounds.

Grade  B-
Indians  28 signed 22 unsigned  - Cleveland did great the 1st 20 rounds of the draft but only signed 8 of its last 30 picks.

Grade  B-
Yankees  30 signed 19 unsigned  - Just a case of not signing enough targeted players.

Grade  C+
Angels   32 signed 22 unsigned  -Had 6 of the top 80 picks in the draft and all signed. Needed to keep up that lazer focus.

Grade  C+

Rays  32 signed 17 unsigned  - Not Signing the 1st , 2nd, and 10th round picks hurts the Rays.

Grade  C
A’s  28 signed  21 unsigned  - I would expect the A’s who made drafting and developing cool would sign more picks.

Grade C
Tigers  24 signed 26 unsigned  - The Tigers stopped signed players in the 30th  round, too bad they drafted up to round 50.

Grade C
Red Sox  26 Signed 24 Unsigned  - Signed 7 picks of last 25 rounds. Did someone say pencils down?

Grade C-
Cubs  25 signed 25 unsigned  - Way too many guys unsigned, looks like the Cubs need more staff. Could they not get a Temp to work the late round guys?

Grade C-

Orioles  25 signed 25 unsigned  - The Orioles and Cubs must have the same kind of draft Philosophy.

Grade C-

Losers

Pirates  23 signed 24 unsigned

Grade  D+
Rangers   25 signed 26 unsigned

Grade  D
Twins  23 signed 28 unsigned

Grade  D-

My Ratings are based on not so much the player since we don’t know who will be a stud and who will be a dud. The Ratings are based on executing the draft and teams signings players they have scouted, targeted and drafted.

  • Fielder and BraunMLB Draft - There is no sure thing. When it comes to the MLB draft there is no such thing as a sure thing. Time and time again the 1st overall pick is not the best player in the draft and in some cases does not even make it to the Majors. Pitchers may be the riskiest of......
