Cleveland Browns End Scoring Drought in Win vs Detroit Lions, 27-10

Daniel WolfAug 22, 2009

The offensive scoring draught is finally over!

The Browns got it into the endzone on offense two times, once on a four yard run by Jamal Lewis and once on an 81-yard run by rookie James Davis.

Josh Cribbs was spectacular as he started off the game with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but it was negated by a holding penalty.

Later, Cribbs brought back a punt return 86 yards for a touchdown and he hauled in one pass for 20 yards.

As far as the quarterback competition was concerned, Derek Anderson got more reps than Brady Quinn and made the most of his opportunities by going 8-13 for 130 yards and one interception.

Quinn was 3-5 for 29 yards in his limited playing time.

After Anderson's showing, the quarterback derby is much closer once again and it looks like Mangini will probably not name a starter until after the preseason is over and before the opening of the 2009 season.

Running back James Davis played the majority of the game and after struggling to find yardage, Mangini was very patient and kept feeding Davis the ball, which finally worked in the third quarter as Davis busted open a draw on a third and long, made a couple moves to make defenders miss and took it to the house for 81 yards.

Even play-by-play announcer Jim Donovan said he though it was a crazy play call but could be the play call of the day.

On the defensive side of the ball, there was slim to none pass rush once again and defensive backs did have solid, tight coverage all night long.

Once again rookies David Veikune and Coye Francies contributed with tackles and consistently being around the ball and Kaluka Maiava made an impact on special teams.

The Lions top rookie, number one overall pick, Matthew Stafford kept overthrowing his receivers all night long and if that continues then look for another long year in 2009 for the Lions.

Also, the Lions top three receivers Calvin Johnson, Dennis Northcut, and Bryant Johnson were all inactive for the game.

It was nice to finally see the Browns get into the endzone on offense, and play a well rounded game as a team even though it was against the Lions.

Co-players of the game are Josh Cribbs and James Davis hands down.

There are still issues with too many unnecessary penalties and the quarterback derby needs to really get a front-runner in the final two preseason games.

Next week the Browns play a very talented and disciplined Tennessee Titans team and look for the Titans to bring their "A" game since the third preseason game is usually the "dress rehearsal" before the season begins for the first team players.
