Jakub Voracek Looking to Earn Philadelphia Flyers' 1st Art Ross Trophy

Bleacher Report MilestonesMar 31, 2015

With 76 points through his first 72 games of the season, Philadelphia Flyers forward Jakub Voracek has a chance to be come the first player in franchise history to win the Art Ross Trophy, which is given annually to the NHL's leader in points, per CSN Philadelphia.

Oddly enough, Flyers legend Eric Lindros actually tied Jaromir Jagr atop the league leaderboard with 70 points in 1994-95, but Jagr took home the award on a tiebreaker for scoring more goals.

Jagr, of course, was playing for the archrival Pittsburgh Penguins at the time, making Lindros' narrow defeat all the more obnoxious to the Philadelphia faithful.

The Art Ross Trophy competition may again come down to the two Pennsylvania franchises this season, as Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby currently sits three points ahead of Voracek with a league-leading 79.

Also in the mix are New York Islanders forward John Tavares (77), Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin (75), Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn (74) and Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom (73), heading into Tuesday night's action.

The Flyers, Penguins and Capitals each enter Tuesday with six games remaining on their schedules, while the Islanders and Stars both have just five games left to play.

As luck would have it, the Flyers and Penguins are set to face each other Wednesday night in Pittsburgh, with the race for the Art Ross Trophy adding some extra intrigue to a game featuring two teams in very different places.

The Flyers are playing out the string in anticipation of the NHL draft in June, while the Penguins still hope to secure home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs by staying ahead of the Islanders and Capitals for second place in the Metropolitan Division standings.

If Voracek can somehow surpass Crosby in the points column, it would provide Philadelphia fans with a bit of consolation for yet another season in which their team was outperformed by its in-state rivals.
