NFL Looking to Expand International Series to Mexico, Germany, China and More

The NFL may be coming to a country near you.

Albert Breer of the NFL Network tweeted this on Thursday: “NFL working to expand the International Series. Looking at regular season games in Mexico and/or Germany in '17.”

Breer also had a lengthy report linked to his tweet that detailed exactly how the NFL is planning to expand its reach beyond the United States’ (and London’s) borders in the coming years.

NFL Executive Vice President Mark Waller commented on the agenda, via Breer:

"

The work we're doing now is to ask, 'How do we accelerate the agenda in Mexico, Canada and China?’ Those would be our next stage, and we have offices in those three countries. And then, after those, where should be our focus? I think we've concluded that Brazil and Germany are the next two frontier markets, which is where the Pro Bowl idea comes from.

"

Waller also said that the NFL is “absolutely” on track to have a full-time team in London by 2022, and that it would have expanded to four games there instead of three for the upcoming season were it not for the Rugby World Cup.

Breer also noted that the league is at least considering the possibility of hosting the 2017 Pro Bowl in Brazil and will possibly even bring some preseason football or training camp to Mexico in the near future.

It certainly makes sense that the NFL would try to broaden its target audience by expanding the International Series, especially since all three games in London are already sold out for this season. There is clearly a market to be tapped, and the sport will try to do just that.

Football is king in America when it comes to television ratings, attendance and the overall impact on pop culture, and it seems like developing a larger international audience is the next step.
