Odds Breakdown
Only eight games are set for the Sweet 16, three of which are separated by a three-point spread or less. That, my friends, means there is bound to be some tight matchups leading up to an Elite Eight that will be unforgettable.
The first showdown features one team coming off a convincing upset and another that narrowly survived against a lower seed. Notre Dame is surging at the right time of the year but will face a Wichita State program that is experienced this late in March.
Jerian Grant, the do-it-all guard who led the Irish to victory in the round of 32, came back for this exact reason. The senior spoke about his plans for the rest of the way in the tournament.
"We want to do something special," via Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post. "We want to leave a legacy at Notre Dame and we’re definitely on our way to doing that."
While Grant is trying to secure his legacy at Notre Dame, N.C. State is attempting to change the entire culture this year.
The Wolfpack have two national championships in program history, but those came in 1974 and 1983. Since the '80s, it's mostly been abysmal for N.C. State, with a few scattered trips to the Sweet 16 scattered throughout.
But that's where it stops every time. Since 1986, the Pack have made it to the Sweet 16 three times, losing all three. Anthony "Cat" Barber and Trevor Lacey will be looking to change that trend against a Louisville team that the Pack has already beaten. Suffice to say, that might be the most intriguing matchup of the week.
Following those delicious matchups, Oklahoma and Michigan State will close the curtains for the Sweet 16. If history tells us anything, it's never to count out the Spartans in March with Tom Izzo at the helm. Anyone who did this season is likely already looking at a shredded bracket.
The legendary coach led his team to two wins in March for the 12th time in 20 seasons with the Spartans. As FiveThirtyEight points out, his track record with MSU easily makes him the best coach in March:
No, that's not surprising. And no, it wouldn't be a shock to see his Spartans take down Oklahoma. That's why the odds are actually in the No. 7 seed's favor for the second time in the Sweet 16.
Even against a talented Sooners squad that includes talented guards like Buddy Hield and Isaiah Cousins, Sparty still has the upper hand.
That is the power of Izzo.
