Storylines To Follow

Kentucky is so good that a video can be produced about whether its backups could win the national championship and nobody will roll their eyes at it. Kentucky is that talented, that deep and that balanced.

Sure, its backups almost assuredly wouldn't win a championship, but the fact that we can even ask that question and have a serious discussion about the answer should tell you just how talented the team is.

West Virginia has a shot because it isn't afraid. It will press the Wildcats and try to beat them up. But it will need to play perfectly, and a team simply hasn't played perfectly against Kentucky yet.

Wisconsin looks like one of the three or four teams remaining that could knock off the Wildcats. The Badgers aren't just obsessed with stenographers; they also want to win.

Frank Kaminsky has arguably been the best player in the country, and Nigel Hayes and Sam Dekker form an elite supporting cast. Wisconsin doesn't have the depth of some of the other contenders, but its starting five is as good as any in the nation. North Carolina isn't going to slow down the Badgers.

Arizona is probably the other team playing Thursday that has a shot against Kentucky. It has the size, athleticism and ability to lock teams down defensively to pull off the upset. Of course, it will have to get past Xavier first, but the Musketeers haven't faced a team as good as Arizona yet this year.

They'll fight, and they'll scrap, but they won't get past Arizona.

Can Wichita State make it past Notre Dame? Ron Baker and Co. had their revenge against a Kansas side that refuses to schedule regular-season matchups against them, but they'll face a Notre Dame team led by the explosive Jerian Grant next. The Irish are 4-0 in overtime games this season and have won their two tournament games by a combined seven points.

Some folks might say the Irish let teams stay too close. Others will say they know how to win in the clutch. Regardless, they'll be a tough out, even for a talented, under-seeded Wichita State side.
