Novak Djokovic is having a pretty good year. All he's done thus far in 2015 is win the Australian Open and at Indian Wells, the two biggest tournaments of the year thus far. Indian Wells was his 50th career title, but Djokovic maintained there's no secret to his success beyond good old-fashioned hard work, per CNN:
"Obviously there are a lot of sacrifices that have to be made. Hard work, commitment to the sport. It all starts with you at the end of the day because it's an individual sport. You need to be able to put in all these hours on the court and off the court, understanding what makes you better.
I think the four of us guys who have been dominating the men's side for the last seven, eight years have been moving the borders and raising the standards of the performance of the play and making each other better players, making each other improve, so that's something that's always in the back of my mind—the awareness that everyone is working as hard as I do.
"
While Roger Federer won't be participating in this tournament, the other two players Djokovic referenced—Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray—most certainly will be. And at this point, they seem like the only two in the field who can slow down Djokovic, who right now is the undisputed top player in the men's game and is an impressive 19-2 this season.
He's also the defending champion at this event, so knocking him off his current perch won't be an easy task.
Of course, knocking off the defending champ on the women's side won't be any easier, as Serena Williams took home the 2014 title. Williams couldn't win at Indian Wells in her return to the tournament, as she had to withdraw from the semifinals with a knee injury, though she has yet to lose in 2015 and took home the Australian Open title.
The withdrawal at Indian Wells set up an awkward moment as Williams addressed the fans—remember, she hadn't played the tournament in years after being booed there before deciding to come back this year—as Brian Phillips of Grantland noted:
"MC overdid it a little with the "we love you here"/"it's home" PR talking points, but Serena's poise is astonishing.
— Brian Phillips (@runofplay) March 21, 2015"
Hopefully, Williams will be able to play in Miami. The women's game is simply more compelling when she's a part of it, even if players like Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki and others would probably be perfectly fine with Williams not standing in their way.
Without Williams, a handful of contenders would emerge as potential favorites, including the women listed above. Where the men are dominated by the top four, the women's game has been all about Serena and The Pack.
If Williams' knee doesn't hold up or isn't 100 percent, make way for The Pack.
