NBA Draft: Stay or Go Back to College?

Best Hypothetical Starting 5 in the History of College Basketball

Bennett SpectorAug 21, 2009

If you could take the 5 best players from any one program and combine them to make the ultimate college basketball team, which school would be the best. UCLA has two of the greatest players (both centers) in history but is that enough to defeat Jordan and company at UNC? Or would Pistol Pete and Shaq at LSU combine to be the greatest 1-2 of all time?

Honorable mention that didn't make the cut: Wake Forest, N.C. State, Georgetown

#5 Duke Blue Devils

1 of 5

Carlos Boozer, Shane Battier, Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, JJ Reddick.

By far the whitest team on the list (even with the interracial squad). Boozer was a solid college guy with a good jumpshot for a big guy. Battier can D up with the best of em'. Laettner is considered one of the greatest college playres of all time. Grant Hill had superstar qualities and was sponsored by Fila. And as for JJ Reddick, well he swished more deep 3's than the Cameron Crazies knew what to do with.

They are a small team but with a bunch of swingman and good perimeter shooting they could create a few tough matchups.

# 4 LSU Tigers

2 of 5

Shaq is a no brainer. Big Baby was pretty darn good his senior year. Tyrus Thomas is about as athletic as you can get. Marcus Thornton, you might not have heard of but he won SEC player of the year in 2008 and is a solid athlete. And as for Pistol Pete, well he averaged over 40 ppg for his college career. Enough Said

#3 UNC Tar Heels

3 of 5

James Worthy, Tyler Hansbrough, Antawn Jamison, Vince Carter, Michael Jordan.

Coach: Dean Smith

James Worthy (50 greatest players in NBA history), Hansbrough (most points at UNC and in ACC), Antawn Jamison (national player of the year) Vince Carter (freaskishly athletic) MJ (greatest all time).

No true point guard but does that matter with MJ & Worthy? I think not.

#2 Houston Cougars

4 of 5

Hakeem Olajuwon, Elvin Hayes, Michael Young, Clyde Drexler, Damon Jones

Another big team with some shot blocking prowess. Between Hakeem and Big E, these two might have the only shot at shutting down Kareem and Walton.

Clyde wasn't exactly a superstar in college, but his consistent play and superstar upside put him on the list. And as for Damon Jones, well somebody has to play point guard.

By the way....

"Hayes scored 39 points and had 15 rebounds while limiting Alcindor to just 15 points as Houston beat UCLA 71–69 to snap the Bruins 47-game winning streak in what has been called the 'Game of the Century'."

#1 UCLA Bruins

5 of 5

Starting 5: Lou Alcindor, Bill Walton, Ed O' Bannon, Reggie Miller, Baron Davis

Coach: John Wooden

Kareem and Walton are both 5's. But what are you going to do, not start Walton? It's a big team but Reggie would be given tons of open looks because the bigs' would be drawing double-teams down low. BD's court vision and explosiveness while at UCLA was second to very few and O'Bannon would have to play the 3; a little oversized but I think he would make do.

Walton and Kareem alone make this team nearly impossible to defeat. Two of the greatest college basketball players of all time.

Bruins take this one home, easily.
