Best Possible Outcomes for Jacksonville Jaguars' Top 3 Draft Picks

Evan ReierMar 23, 2015

The first two days of the NFL draft will be the time that the Jacksonville Jaguars can find the best young talent to join the team. The players selected in the first three rounds are guys you can expect to start or play a large role in the coming season, and the Jaguars need to excel on those first two days.

The Jaguars have done well over the past couple years in the draft, and you can expect more of the same. Whatever general manager Dave Caldwell and the rest of his team have done to make their selections has worked, and they can cap their success with a solid draft this year.

For the first two days, the Jaguars need to focus on getting talented players at these three spots:

  • Edge-rusher
  • Wide receiver
  • Running back

Now, I'd say that the orientation of that list also deems their importance. First and foremost, the Jaguars need a big-time pass-rusher at the end of the front seven. That is crucial to the defense's continued improvement.

Wide receiver comes next due to the lack of talent at the spot. I'd prefer the Jaguars get a veteran to come in and fill that role, but the Jacksonville has made little noise in free agency for that spot so far.

Finally, the Jaguars need a proper back. Denard Robinson and Toby Gerhart proved successful at times last season, but the Jacksonville needs a reliable back that it can count on in the future.

There's no telling what spot will be picked in what round, and who, for that matter. It can't be understated, however, that these are the crucial needs the Jaguars have to fill, and these first rounds might be the perfect place to do it.

With the basic information out of the way, let's get into the best possible outcome for the Jaguars' top three picks.

5. Kevin White, Trey Flowers and TJ Yeldon

1 of 5

While this may be the lowest ranked outcome on this list, it's still a solid first two days. The Jaguars can hit all their needs with wide receiver Kevin White, defensive end Trey Flowers and running back T.J. Yeldon.

Should the Jaguars select a WR with the third overall pick, White is quite the option. White had a fantastic 2014 (109 receptions, 1447 yards, 10 TDs) and is one of the strongest and most physical receivers available.

While White isn't my option for the first-round pick, it wouldn't be a bad one if the Jaguars are confident in his abilities.

With the second round, the Jaguars should go for Flowers. Flowers has been a top DE in the SEC for a couple years now and could make the jump to the NFL seamlessly. While he isn't receiving the hype that he deserves, Flowers could be a really good option in the second round.

And finally with the third pick, the Jaguars should select a running back, and Yeldon can be that guy. Yeldon will most likely be available and offers a lot for an offense. A consistent and strong runner, Yeldon is also great at receiving out of the backfield, a useful tool for Blake Bortles.

This is a solid outcome for the Jaguars that could create two or three starters, and even though it's not the best possible outcome, I can't say I'd be displeased with it.

4. Dante Fowler Jr, Ameer Abdullah, Justin Hardy

2 of 5

The Jaguars have a variety of options at defensive end for the first round, and Dante Fowler Jr is one of the strongest choices. In the second and third round, Jacksonville could focus on offense and select proven talent in players like Ameer Abdullah and Justin Hardy.

Fowler is one of the top pass-rushers available in this year's draft and for good reason. He had 8.5 sacks in 2014 for Florida and is an incredible athlete, Fowler is a strong choice. He's not the best option available in my opinion, but Fowler would be a solid pick at third overall.

In the second round, there may be some left over running backs from the first round like Todd Gurley or Melvin Gordon, but a surefire pick would be Nebraska's Abdullah.

Abdullah has 4,588 career yards and 39 career touchdowns and is a strong, powerful back. The Jaguars hoped for that type of guy in Toby Gerhart, but Abdullah offers better footwork and agility than Gerhart but still maintains that powerful frame. Abdullah would be a fantastic second-round pick.

To sum up the first two days, the last selection I'd be satisfied with is ECU's Justin Hardy. Hardy is one of the most successful wide receivers in history with 121 career receptions, 4,541 career yards and 35 career touchdowns.

Hardy has been a standout for ECU for years, and the fact that he's projected by NFLDraftScout.com as a third-rounder means that the Jaguars can sweep in and steal an experienced and talented receiver.

Once again, this isn't the best possible outcome, but sensible decisions in the first and second round and a steal in the third would make for a very impressive first two days.

3. Amari Cooper, Duke Johnson, Mario Edwards Jr

3 of 5

In this outcome, I see the Jaguars focusing primarily on offense with their first two picks. Besides Kevin White, Amari Cooper is also available and is arguably as good or better than White. In the second round, the Jaguars could select running back Duke Johnson and defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. in the third round.

Cooper is one of the most successful receivers in Alabama's history, and if any receiver is ready for the NFL, it's probably him. Cooper is fast, smart and used to playing against top talent.

Cooper offers more speed and chances for big plays than White, and what he lacks in White's strength, he makes up for with technical skills. Cooper is a proven option and would be a great first-round pick.

In the second round, Johnson is the other worthy option at running back besides Ameer Abdullah. Johnson has been showing his ridiculous speed at Miami for a couple seasons now, and he would be a solid selection that most Jaguars fans are familiar with.

Johnson is quick and is at his best when he goes to the outside. Johnson may not be the strong back that the Jaguars wanted in Gerhart, but he's instinctive and fast and can bust huge runs at any given moment.

With the third-round pick, the Jaguars could select Edwards, who is another familiar name. A disruptor in the backfield for Florida State, when he wasn't sidelined due to injury, Edwards has been under the radar despite playing for FSU.

Edwards is a definite gamble, but if he can overcome his plaguing injuries, Edwards could be a first- or second-round talent in the third round, similar to Aaron Colvin's situation in last year's draft.

This outcome would be a bit of risk for the Jaguars, but all these players have tremendous upside and potential. There's no telling what might happen with whoever the Jaguars select, and the possibilities for these three players are endless.

2. Randy Gregory, Duke Johnson, Justin Hardy

4 of 5

This outcome is a mix of the Dante Fowler Jr. and Amari Cooper outcomes, but with Randy Gregory instead. Gregory is one of the best athletes in the draft, and I really like him as a potential option as an edge-rusher.

Gregory has been one of my personal favorites since the start of the offseason. Gregory is quick and tenacious when going after the quarterback, and while he isn't the biggest guy available, he's one of the fastest.

I like to look at Gregory the same way people looked at Jaguars outside linebacker Telvin Smith last season. Like Smith, Gregory uses his speed to the best of his ability to get around blockers, and he is excellent with his hands.

Gregory is a solid mix of speed and technical ability, and if the Jaguars selected him with the third overall pick, it would be a near-perfect selection.

Duke Johnson seems like the better overall option for the Jaguars instead of Ameer Abdullah, but both would be really solid selections. However, if Todd Gurley or Melvin Gordon slip to the second, the Jaguars would have to take one of them over Johnson or Abdullah.

Justin Hardy is still my pick in the third round. He's the most experienced and is as talented as anyone available at that point. I could see Tyler Lockett from Kansas State as a potential option, but if I have to pick between Hardy and Lockett, I have to pick Hardy.

This is an incredible first two days' worth of picks. The Jaguars hit their holes and hit them with talent and large upside. However, it's not the best possible outcome.

1. Leonard Williams, Sammie Coates, Jeremy Langford

5 of 5

The difference-maker in this outcome is USC's Leonard Williams. The top pass-rusher in the draft and one of the most versatile guys available, Williams should be the top priority if available at the third pick.

Williams offers everything that you want in a pass-rusher. Strength, quickness, intelligence and, most importantly, a nose for the football. Williams has an almost natural prowess for finding the QB, and he can do it at multiple positions.

Williams can play at the tackle spots and at the end spots and has even shown decent ability to drop to short-yardage coverage. Williams' ability to do a lot of things well at various positions could be very useful for the Jaguars and would allow them to mix and match according to the situation.

Williams is the best pass-rusher available, and if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn't desperately need a QB, he'd be first overall. The Jaguars may not get Williams because of his value and the fact that the Tennessee Titans have two quarterbacks to select from this season.

In the second round, one of the top receivers both physically and technically is Auburn's Sammie Coates. Coates would most likely still be available at that point and offers a mix of Amari Cooper and Kevin White.

He's not quite as physical as White and not as fast as Cooper but offers a great hybrid and good value as a second-round pick.

In the third round, I think that the Jaguars can get Jeremy Langford. According to NFL.com, Langford is projected as a late second- or early third-round pick, and if he's available, the Jaguars should pounce on him.

Langford is a big, powerful back with great vision and decision making. Langford may not have the speed of his competitors, but he's quick with his feet and his cuts and could be the physical running back the Jaguars are looking for.

This outcome would be the most exciting and promising option. The Jaguars would get the best overall pass-rusher, a great, complete option at wide receiver and the bruiser at running back that could really help the offense.

While this is just speculation, all of these options are realistic and smart options. General manager Dave Caldwell has proved his worth over the past two drafts, and he realizes what this draft has to offer.

There is depth at what the Jaguars need, and that's a very fortunate fact. Having options is always a part of the draft, but having consistent levels of talent throughout the opening rounds is an opportunity the Jaguars have to capitalize on.

The draft is right around the corner, and the Jaguars have big decisions to make regarding these needs. We won't know till draft day, but until then, we can hope for something similar to these outcomes.
