NFL Considering Brazilian Pro Bowl
Monday, March 23
Alex Marvez of Fox Sports reported that the NFL is looking into the possibility of hosting the Pro Bowl in Brazil in 2017. The event is currently slated to return to Honolulu in 2016, but a site for the following year has not yet been determined.
Houston, which will host Super Bowl LI, is the most viable candidate within the United States. Marvez notes the NFL is considering Brazil not only as a place of international growth for the sport but also because players may be more inclined to accept the invitation in Brazil. Recent seasons have seen more and more selected players drop out of the game, citing either injury or the need to rest.
The ratings and the competitiveness of the game have dropped as a result. The issue has gotten to the point that the NFL and the NFLPA have considered canceling the game altogether. While that won't happen anytime soon, heading to Brazil may be seen as a last-ditch effort to save the Pro Bowl by the league.
