NFL Veteran Combine 2015: TV Schedule, Live Stream and Projections

Carl LittleMar 22, 2015

College basketball players competing in the NCAA tournament aren't the only ones with sweaty palms this weekend, seeking to survive and advance.

Michael Bush, Felix Jones and Michael Sam are just a few of the over 100 free agents expected to be in attendance when the NFL holds its inaugural veteran combine Sunday in Tempe, Arizona.

From old hands with significant NFL experience, to hopefuls who have never played in a regular-season game, the combine is essentially offering its invitees who are not on any particular team's radar what is likely a final chance to distinguish themselves and fulfill the goal of joining an NFL team.

2015 NFL Veteran Combine

Time: 8 p.m. ET

TV: NFL Network

Live Stream: NFL.com

Here are three notable players who can almost assuredly help an NFL team shore up some much-needed depth in its quest for the Super Bowl.

Michael Sam

Sam, probably the combine's biggest household name and a seventh-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, showed promise early. He impressed during the preseason with the St. Louis Rams, but it was not enough to make the team's opening-day roster.

He soon joined the practice squad in Dallas but was released there as well. Sam, the league's first openly gay player, said on Twitter that he is looking forward to giving a redemptive effort at the veteran combine:

While he certainly has a laudable attitude, nothing much has changed in terms of Sam's ability to rush quarterbacks.

Sam's scores were underwhelming at the combine in 2014. The analysis, according to Nolan Nawrocki of NFL.com, said that he "lacked the burst and acceleration off the edge to get a step on blockers and finish." Sam, the SEC co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, will have an opportunity to prove that he has improved and that his skills have adapted better to the pro game.

Felix Jones

Jones also served a stint in Dallas. The Cowboys drafted him in the first round in 2008, and Jones was elevated to the role of starting running back ahead of DeMarco Murray, who led the NFL in rushing this past season.

However, injuries and inconsistent play caused Jones to have an increasingly reduced role with the Cowboys, and they eventually let him go. In 2013, he signed a one-year contract with Philadelphia but was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the same year.

It's been more than a year since Jones' last game with the Steelers, but, on the bright side, he hasn't suffered any additional wear and tear on his body during that time. Plus, he's only 28. If Jones has maintained the burst that rocketed him to a career per-carry average of 4.7 yards and he shows that he is healthy, an NFL team may bring him into its stable of running backs, at least through the preseason.

Adam Carriker

While former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland recently retired from football at the age of 24 to avoid potential injuries, Carriker is one of many former NFL players trying to overcome them and claw their way back into the NFL. The 30-year-old Carriker had multiple surgeries on his right leg in 2012 and '13 and was defiant recently on Twitter, presumably with respect to his comeback attempt:

The odds are certainly against Carriker to make it back after three years away from the NFL. With his injury history, teams are more likely to take a chance on a younger, fresher player. But the former starter received an invitation to the inaugural combine for a reason, and it presents Carriker with the opportunity to get back on an NFL field if he can show that he's healthy.
