Baltimore Ravens: Joe Flacco Is Just Another Trent Dilfer

Ramone BrownAug 21, 2009

Joe Flacco has been praised for his rookie heroics in a cinderella season where he lead the Baltimore Ravens to a 11-5 season and became the first rookie to win a playoff game—actually he won two.

But how much praise does he really deserve?

Flacco is often compared to the likes of "Big" Ben Roethlisburger and fellow rookie Matt Ryan. But in reality he doesn't even compare. In reality Joe Flacco is just another Trent Dilfer.

Some will argue all that matters is winning and thats what Flacco does he wins, just look at his record.

So what?, in 2004 Trent Dilfer was undefeated in every game he started. Guess what?,  he posted a dismal 46.1 QB rating. Dilfer also has playoff wins, he even won a SuperBowl with the Ravens. But like Flacco, Dilfer was just along for the ride.

Last year Flacco lead the Ravens offensive passing attack to 28th in the league. Thats not very impressive for someone being compared to Matt Ryan or Ben Roethlisburger.

Based on last years stats Flacco should be compared to the likes of Trent Dilfer, JaMarcus Russell and Tyler Thigpen. And honestly the only thing Flacco has on any of the three forementioned players is the gigantic disgusting unibrow.

Flacco and the passing game was actually the lone weak spot on the Ravens last year. Despite a horrible year through the air the Ravens posted an 18th ranked offense, a 4th ranked rushing attack and a 2nd ranked defense. Based on that I would say the Ravens could have won without this guy.

Flacco is nothing but a game manager, he plays not to lose. Good QBs play to win and succeed when you put the ball in there hand. Flacco on the other hand failed when it really mattered and crumbled under pressure.

Take his last two games against the Steelers: 20-23 overtime loss, Flacco had two fumbles one of which was returned for a TD. Flacco's lackluster performance was the reason game even went to over time and he was the reason they lost.

Then there's the Ravens 23-14 loss in the playoffs. The Ravens managed to out-rush the Steelers by nearly 50 yards and had more overall offensive production. But guess what Flacco threw three INTs, enough said.
