2015 NFL Draft: 1st-Round Order and Prospects' Stock Watch from Pro Days

Chris RolingMar 20, 2015

Like the real thing in New York, the NFL stock market is an ever-present factor continuing to chug along whether folks pay attention or not.

While sporting fans observe brackets and perhaps prepare for golf season, the NFL realm continues to make draft preparations behind the scenes thanks to college pro days featuring the top talent across the nation.

While the NFL Scouting Combine serves a similar purpose, college pro days at least give franchises a chance to uncover underrated prospects—and better form their draft board centered on the first round.

Highlighting Pro Day Stock Movement

Stock Up: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State

Perhaps the most difficult position to figure out this year just so happens to be one of the most important at the pro level.

Trae Waynes continues to be one of the top names to watch after leading a strong Michigan State defense last season and performing well at the combine.

There, Waynes weighed in at 6'0" and 186 pounds before ranking among the best at the position in the 40-yard-dash (4.31 seconds) and bench press (19 reps of 225 pounds).

Waynes was at it again at Michigan State's pro day, standing on most of his numbers from Indianapolis and showing well in drills. CollegeFootball 24/7 puts it best:

While perhaps a bit biased, Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Darqueze Dennard—a first-round pick out of Michigan State last year—says Waynes did enough to claim the title of top corner.

"I think he just sealed the deal," said Dennard, per Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press. "I think he just showed all the scouts and coaches who came here to witness the pro day that he's the best cornerback, the best defensive back, coming into the draft."

Consistency and elite athleticism go a long way for a prospect at the position any year, something Dennard knows enough about to speak on the matter. For Waynes, the pro day was a major step, although plenty of other corners still have a chance to play catch-up.

Stock Down: Shane Ray, DE/OLB, Missouri

It's code-red time for Missouri edge-rusher Shane Ray.

Once considered a top-five pick by most, Ray performed in just the bench press at the combine after weighing in at 6'3" and 245 pounds. Even those measurements are a tad concerning if teams had hoped to line the Tigers star up in the trenches, as it's too light to hold up against the run.

Missouri's pro day didn't help matters. Brandon Kiley of The Sports Wire provides the numbers:

For a prospect who now figures to be a linebacker in a 3-4 (unless he can put on more weight and not lose speed), the numbers are an issue. NFL Network's Mike Mayock confirmed as much Thursday on Path to the Draft, per NFL.com's Chase Goodbread:

"

His numbers today were not great. As a matter of fact, if you stack his numbers up against the other top four guys in my top-five edge-rush group, you'd see that all of his numbers, starting with a 4.68 40, his cone drills, his jumps, were not as good as the other four guys.

"

As CBS Sports' Dane Brugler notes, everything after simple pass-rushing is a question mark now:

Make note of two critical points, though. One—the world isn't ending for Ray. Two—he still figures to be an elite rusher.

There is still time for Ray to make up ground in individual workouts and such on the path to the draft. Teams know he's a strong rusher, but how he will hold up against the run and drop back into coverage—provided a team wants him as a linebacker—will be key points the rest of the way.

Stock Up: Kevin White, WR, West Virginia

One of the combine's biggest winners just keeps winning.

Kevin White showed up in Indianapolis 6'3" and 215 pounds. Call it a nice surprise, as those numbers were bigger than most would have guessed, an afterthought once he blazed a 4.35 40-yard-dash and repped 225 pounds 23 times on the bench press.

White is a rare breed in the athleticism department, Even better, he used West Virginia's pro day to have what NFL.com's Gil Brandt called an "outstanding workout" before noting scouts asked for even more.

"The scouts in attendance wanted to see more from White, so they had White do some additional work after his 15-minute session with Groh."

White even won off the field, as explained by ESPN's Josina Anderson:

It's not an exaggeration to call White a complete package. Whether a superb pro day in all phases proves enough to move him past Heisman Trophy finalist Amari Cooper on draft day is another conversation.

Still, the numbers in Indianapolis weren't a fluke and consistency in route running and drills cements White as one of the draft's most complete players.
