Heavyweight Shuffle: Shane Carwin to Fight Brock Lesnar

Eric SamulskiAug 21, 2009

After recovering quickly from surgery following his victory over Frakn Mir at UFC 100, Dana White is all set to bring back his controversial Heavyweight Champion as soon as he possibly can.

With all legitimate heavyweight contenders already set to fight in the coming months, the UFC President had to shuffle some things around in order to find a solution.

The answer: move Shane Carwin off the card for UFC 104 and put him face-to-face with Lesnar at UFC 106.

The former Division Two wrestling champ is 11-0 in the MMA including three first round KO wins in the UFC. His last victory over Gabriel Gonzaga showed incredible punching power, as the punch traveled only a span of about eight inches before first met face.

To fill the space left by Carwin's void on the UFC 104 card, Dana White has tabbed newcomer Ben Rothwell to face rising prospect Cain Velasquez. The proud Mexican fighter, sporting a 6-0 record and coming off a decision victory over Cheick Kongo will face a stiff test in Rothwell.

The veteran has put together a 30-6 record and has won 14 of his last 15 fights, his only loss coming by KO to Andrei Arlovski. With 10 years of fighting experience under his belt, he has a significant advantage from being long in the tooth.

The question is, were these the right moves for White to make? Instead of pitting Carwin against Velasquez and seeing which rising star would take off, White could see both of his prized heavyweight contenders both fall. Then what would the aftermath look like?

We could have a new champion and a new, young contender, or we could have a serious dent put in the hopes of the heavyweight division.

Which is more likely?
