Turner Sports broadcaster Craig Sager will not be part of the company's broadcast for the first weekend of the NCAA tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, over the weekend, as doctors have requested additional testing to gauge his progress as he recovers from leukemia.

Sager released a statement via Turner Sports PR on Wednesday:

Sager, 63, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia before last year's NBA playoffs and has been off television for most of the past year while in recovery. He returned to the sideline for the first time on March 5, reporting on a game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Chicago Bulls.

"I was very fortunate I had some doctors I believed in, had some good care," Sager told reporters after that game. "I'm back. A little bit lighter, I don't know if you can see it on TV but I lost close to 50 pounds, got some of it back, but I had to get some new clothes because all those great things I had before don't fit anymore."

The veteran was expected to continue on his journey to a full-time return by traveling with Marv Albert, Chris Webber and Len Elmore for the opening weekend in Omaha. There is no word on whether Sager plans to be involved with coverage of the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight at this time.
