Manchester United Transfer News: Memphis Depay Hint, Nicolas Otamendi Rumours

Rory MarsdenMar 18, 2015

Memphis Depay has dropped another supposed hint on social media that he is set for a move to Manchester United when he leaves PSV Eindhoven in the summer.

The 21-year-old Dutchman has starred for Eredivisie-topping PSV this term, scoring 16 goals in 23 league appearances and providing three assists, per WhoScored.com.

While the Dutch outfit are no doubt eager to keep Depay past the summer, it looks likely that he will move on, with Premier League sides United and Tottenham being linked with the youngster, per Rob Dawson in the Manchester Evening News. The Mirror's Simon Mullock also reported Liverpool have shown interest.

Depay himself has now dropped a big hint that he will not be on his way to Anfield, favouriting a tweet clearly staunchly against such a move, per Football Oranje:

It follows on from a similar move from the player, in which he acknowledged a story linking him with a move to Old Trafford, per Sport Witness:

It would certainly seem like an obvious move for Depay to make, as he worked under United boss Louis van Gaal in the Dutch national team at the 2014 World Cup, and he would surely be eager for a move to the Premier League.

Van Gaal is reportedly interested in bringing his former charge to Old Trafford, with The Sun (h/t Jonathan Green in the Daily Star) reporting that United are lining up a £10 million summer bid for the winger.

Depay is a supremely talented player with terrific ability to run at defenders, link up with other teammates and score goals.

While it would likely take him some time to make the step up to Premier League quality, he would be a worthy purchase as a long-term asset at the club.

As B/R UK's Stan Collymore notes below, United already have plenty of high-quality attacking options in their ranks; thus Depay could ease into the club without having to take on too much responsibility early on:

At the other end of the pitch, although United's defensive unit has improved over the season, they could still do with added strength at centre-back.

A long-term Red Devils target in the position is Valencia's Nicolas Otamendi, and Fichajes.net (h/t Metro's Jamie Sanderson) suggests United will snap him up in the summer by meeting his £35.9 million release clause.

The Argentine has been impressive for Valencia this season as they have conceded 22 goals in La Liga—only Barcelona have conceded fewer—and they currently lie in the third spot.

The 27-year-old is strong in the air and is a fine physical presence, strong in the tackle and a good reader of the game.

He would be a fine addition to Van Gaal's squad, and while his price tag may well be off-putting, United have shown in the past that they are not afraid to splash the cash.

United showed against Spurs at the weekend that they are not far from being a title-challenging team once again, and some savvy transfers in the summer could move them closer to the likes of Chelsea in the Premier League.

Otamendi and Depay would both be solid summer signings, but many more purchases than that would be unnecessary, as United have the spine of an excellent team emerging.
