South Africa Ease Beyond Sri Lanka with Nine-Wicket Win

2 of 2

South Africa (134/1) bt. Sri Lanka (133) by nine wickets.

South Africa underlined their credentials for 2015 Cricket World Cup glory with a dominant nine-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

Angelo Mathews' team won the toss and decided to bat, a decision which would soon come back to haunt them. While Kumar Sangakkara (45) and Lahiru Thirimanne (41) put together a useful partnership of 65, Sri Lanka were forced into panic mode as soon as Kyle Abbott (1-27) and Dale Steyn (1-18) dismissed openers Kusal Perera (3) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (0) in just 4.1 overs.

South Africa relied on spin from this point forward, with Imran Tahir (4-26) and JP Duminy (3-29) confidently working through a team who just couldn't find momentum. After Tahir took the wickets of Thirimanne and Mahela Jayawardene (4), Sri Lanka's hopes of setting a difficult chase quickly crumbled.

Their batting effort was summed up by Duminy's first ever World Cup hat-trick, beginning with his dismissal of Mathews (19), per Sky Sports:

Tahir then removed Thisara Perera (0) with the score at 115/6, before Duminy claimed the wickets of Nuwan Kulasekara (1) and Tharindu Kaushal for a golden duck. Sky Sports shared Duminy's memorable moment:

Sangakkara did his best to steady the ship and continued to stand while his team-mates' wickets tumbled. He had to play a defensive innings, working to his 45 from 96 balls, hitting three boundaries. Morne Morkel (1-27) was the man to secure his vital wicket, dismissing Sangakkara with the score at 127/9 after 36.2 overs.

Dushmantha Chameera (2 n.o.) and Lasith Malinga (3) were never destined to last long at this point. Tahir rounded off his excellent day by taking the latter's wicket, marking an extremely disappointing batting performance from Sri Lanka.

Quick wickets were needed after the 134-run target was set. South African openers Hashim Amla (16) and Quinton de Kock (78 n.o.) worked intently to suck any lingering hopes away from the Sri Lankan bowlers. Malinga (1-43) managed to dismiss Amla just before the break, leaving the score at 40/1 after 6.4 overs.

De Kock pushed on, though, working opposite Faf du Plessis (21 n.o.) to an unbeaten 94-run partnership. A powerful four from De Kock rounded off the encounter, securing South Africa's first win in a World Cup knockout match with just 18.0 overs on the clock.
