Newman, Vikings Reportedly Agree to Deal
Thursday, March 26
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo reported that Newman agreed to a one-year deal with the Vikings. The deal is worth $2.5 million and includes $750,000 guaranteed.
On Wednesday, USA Today's Tom Pelissero reported, "Zimmer says deal is close with Terence Newman. Should get done quickly." Head coach Mike Zimmer was quoted as saying, "He can still play."
On March 19, Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN reported that the Vikings and Newman discussed contract details but stressed that nothing was close to being signed.
Rapoport previously reported that Newman visited Minnesota on March 16 and was set to visit with the Pats last week.
The 36-year-old defensive back is about to enter his 13th NFL season, and while he may have lost a step or two, he is a savvy veteran who would likely be a good fit in Minnesota.
He spent the past three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals after starting out with the Dallas Cowboys, and he has continued to be a regular starter despite his advancing age.
Newman's interception numbers have dwindled in recent years with a total of five over the past three seasons combined, but the two-time Pro Bowler is still a solid cover guy.
