Cristiano Ronaldo Accused of Foul-Mouthed Response Toward Real Madrid Fans

Nick AkermanMar 17, 2015

Cristiano Ronaldo has been accused of telling Real Madrid fans to "f--k off" during the side's 2-0 win over Levante on Sunday.

A video posted by El Chiringuito allegedly shows Ronaldo saying "fodase" after receiving slight jeers from Los Blancos fans following a missed chance. Sport indicates the Portuguese expression "roughly translates as 'f--k off.'"

While Ronaldo's response to the crowd remains inconclusive, there's no doubt the sarcastic look he gives before mouthing something underlines his recent frustration. The former Manchester United man appeared irritated during the match, best highlighted after Gareth Bale tucked away a rebound from his shot, per Ed Malyon of the Mirror:

Although Ronaldo may have been annoyed with himself, former Barcelona striker Gary Lineker suggested something more serious might be at play:

Prior to the match, Ronaldo vowed not to speak to the press for the rest of the season, as reported by Sky Sports. This came after Madrid were booed off the pitch following the Champions League round-of-16 second-leg defeat to Schalke. Despite Madrid progressing 5-4 on aggregate, with Ronaldo netting three times across both ties, the jeers rang loud.

It's worth noting coverage in Spain is becoming heated as we build toward Sunday's crucial Clasico. Madrid trail Barcelona by one point heading into the Camp Nou fixture which could decide this year's La Liga champions.

"The week of the Clasico usually brings an increase in 'morbo'—referring to the animosity between the two camps—and there were indications of attempts to destabilise the opposite camp in the media," wrote Dermot Corrigan of ESPN FC.

Madrid-based newspaper El Confidencial previously reported Neymar's colleagues were "upset" with his reaction to being substituted against Eibar, with "unnamed team-mates" allegedly not liking his lack of "empathy," per Corrigan.

Both sides of the press delivered rallying cries ahead of the encounter, with Lionel Messi reportedly "buzzing" to face Barca's fiercest rivals, per Mundo Deportivo (h/t Corrigan):

Marca noted Madrid head "to the Camp Nou with a different face" after Gareth Bale ended his nine-game goal drought, as translated by Corrigan:

While it's clear Ronaldo certainly says something in the video, optimists will hope he was actually caught muttering something in jest at his missed opportunity. Madrid can do without the inevitable headlines that would arise if CR7 is shown to be criticising the club's fans.

The capital-based side face an extremely difficult task of overhauling Barca on their own turf, and indeed, securing the domestic title. Ronaldo's every move is being scrutinised more closely than ever, with onlookers aiming to catch a hint of discontent as the summer approaches.
