Anderson Silva Versus the Heavyweights: I Had a Dream

A J ArmChair MMAAug 20, 2009

Ever since that infamous day where we watched Anderson Silva one punch James Irvin into a near coma, I found myself day dreaming about possible intriguing match ups for this world killer. It occurred to me while most people were pushing to see Anderson versus GSP that I would be more intrigued to see Anderson face a certain Russian fellow you probably never heard of.

Pound for pound Anderson Silva is well on his way to establishing his legacy as one of the most devastating strikers in mixed martial arts. Anderson's hands are as devastating as Mirko Crocop's kicks cutting down quality contenders like shooting fish in a barrel not to mention knees from hell and some of that jujitsu stuff.

Anderson has all but cleaned out the Middleweight division leaving few truly marqee match ups on the horizon at Middleweight. With Anderson's insistence, he simply won't face long time friend Lyoto Machida at Light Heavyweight.

It doesn't make sense for Anderson to keep competing at Light Heavyweight without being inevitably forced to make a tough decision down the road should he continue to find success.

In my mind a truly dream match up would be to see Anderson Silva face Fedor Emelianenko since these two likely walk around at near the same weight it makes sense. It doesn't hurt they both appear on almost everyone's pound for pound lists.

I certainly wouldn't complain about seeing GSP bulk up to fight Anderson like so many others though I feel as though GSP could be at a remarkable disadvantage physically to the larger Silva which GSP himself has commented on.

While a shot at Fedor is currently wishful thinking for everyone in the UFC, there is no shortage of intriguing match ups for Anderson at Heavyweight. Namely Randy Couture for one.

I would also love to see Mirko Crocop have a shot at Anderson. I am not entirely convinced Anderson couldn't hold his own versus the larger heavyweights like the Carwins and the Lesnars should he prove as dominant versus the smaller heavyweights.

Whether or not these little dream match ups of mine ever come to pass remains to be seen though much like seeing Muhammad Ali versus Rocky Marciano or Mike Tyson.

A guy can dream can't he?
