Bundesliga Matchday 2: Schalke and Wolves Win Big

Samrin HasibAug 20, 2009

The game of the weekend was supposed to be Bayern vs Werder.

Instead, that turned out to be a lacklustre game with Mesut Oezil opening the scoring with a sweet shot.

Mario Gomez equalized with a goal that summed up the whole game: The goal wasn't pretty and neither was the match.

Final score: Bayern 1:1 Werder

Meanwhile, former Bayern man Ze Roberto was enjoying himself in northern Germany. Hamburg was up 3-1 within the first 12 minutes.

Guy Demel and Nelson Valdez exchanged goals, which only hit the back of the net due to poor defensive errors. Ze Roberto then tucked in a rebound giving Hamburg the lead.

Paolo Guerrero and Marcus Berg completed the rout. The final score was Hamburg 4:1 Dortmund. ( Dortmund also got thrashed 5-0 by Real in the club's 100th anniversary).

So, what has Stuttgart been up to?

They played a good match against second division champions SC Freiburg. Pavel Pogrebynak and Elson gave VfB a 2-0 lead.

Mohammadou Idrissou pulled one back for Freiburg only for Elson to restore the two-goal  cushion six minutes later.

Idrissou's second gave Freiburg hope but Julian Schieber's strike ended any chance of a comeback. Final score: Stuttgart 4:2 Freiburg

Frankfurt and Nurnberg played out a 1-1 draw with Caio and Albert Bunjaku trading goals. Mainz play Bayern next.

Hoffenheim seem to be able to do well against most opponents except Bayer.

Last season, they conceded nine against Bayer over two matches and scored only three. This season, a Stefan Kiessling goal was enough to see off Hoffenheim.

Wolfsburg visited Koeln and beat Lukas Poldi's side 3-1.

A goal from Fabrice Ehret was cancelled out when Sascha Riether sent in a cross for Edin Dzeko. Dzeko finished off swiftly.

A Pierre Wome own goal gave Wolfsburg the lead and Obafemi Martins put the icing on the cake by beating a few defenders and sending the ball to the back of the net.

Hanover manager Dieter Hecking stepped down following this result: Hanover 1:1 Mainz. An Aristide Bance goal after the hour mark was cancelled out by Jiri Stajner, thus rescuing a point for the home side.

Gladbach beat Hertha 2-1. Hertha was brought down to earth.

Roel Brouwers scored with a header while Karim Matmour finished from close range to give Gladbach a 2-0 lead. Gojko Kacar got one back but when he hit the bar later, it was quite evident that the day belonged to Gladbach.

Guess who won the first Ruhr derby?—I know it's an easy guess as Bochum were the opponents.

For Schalke however this represented much more than bragging rights in the Ruhr. Who would have thought that Schalke might challenge for the title after last season?

A beautiful shot from 19-year old Christoph Moritz opened the scoring. Heiko Westermann added a second via a header while Jefferson Farfan scored the third.

Final Score: Schalke 3:0 Bochum.

Wolfsburg and Schalke top the table with six points and a goal difference of +4.

Once again, Bayern's loss was Hamburg's gain. Bayern could have done with Ze Roberto on the pitch.

Disagreements between Louis Van Gaal and Franck Ribery about Ribery's playing position were widely publicized in the German newspapers.

Just for a bit of a laugh, I will finish off with a quote from Ribery: "I never said I wanted to leave to Real Madrid. If I wanted to leave, I would have announced it."
