Wright took to Twitter to show his excitement for joining his new team:
Wright only has one interception in his career, but he was durable enough for the Chargers last season to play in 14 games. He is also only 27 years old and is theoretically hitting his prime as a potential contributor.
It has been a tumultuous offseason for the 49ers, as coach Jim Harbaugh took the Michigan job, star linebacker Patrick Willis retired and franchise mainstays Frank Gore, Mike Iupati, Chris Culliver and Perrish Cox, per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, all joined new teams. If nothing else, the addition of Wright should be welcome among San Francisco fans because it is just that—an addition.
With 2014 first-rounder Jimmie Ward, whose season was cut short due to injury, likely holding down the nickel cornerback spot this season, Wright joins Dontae Johnson, Keith Reaser, Kenneth Acker and Tramaine Brock in a competition for recently vacated cornerback roles left in the wake of the 49ers' offseason exodus.
The 49ers were fifth in the NFL against the pass in 2014 and won on the back of their defense. Adding depth in the form of Wright will help that continue next season.
