Kevin White: Breaking Down West Virginia WR's Pro-Day Workout

Tim DanielsMar 13, 2015

West Virginia wide receiver Kevin White, who's trying to prove he should be the first player from the position off of the board in the 2015 NFL draft, took part in limited drills at the Mountaineers' pro day Friday.

White has competition from Alabama's Amari Cooper and Louisville's DeVante Parker, among others, for that honor.

He clearly has confidence in himself, as illustrated in comments passed along by Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last month: "I don't feel that any receiver can do what I can do. Whether it's blocking, creating space, taking a tunnel screen to the house, I do it all. I'm not saying that to be cocky, just confident. I feel like I'm one of a kind."

The wideout had a strong showing at the NFL Scouting Combine. Questions about his speed were eliminated with a 4.35-second effort in the 40-yard dash, and he was also one of the position's top performers in the bench press.

When a player shines at the combine, they usually scale back their involvement at their pro day. Quite simply, there's no reason to do the athletic testing unless you're trying to prove something. He already accomplished what he needed in Indianapolis last month.

Marc Basham of WV Sports provided the details of the receiver's plan for the day:

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com noted the effort wouldn't likely have much impact on his draft stock:

Keenan Cummings of WV Sports highlighted the rising star's trademark warm-up gear:

Once the drills got underway, White looked relaxed and loose. His routes were smooth, and most of the work looked even easier than it's designed to be: simple pitch-and-catch situations where he could show off his agility.

Bill West of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review pointed out he was working with former West Virginia quarterback Clint Trickett:

WVU Football passed along some video of the action:

Alas, just as White was getting ready to wrap up a clean outing, an off-target throw caused him to drop the final pass, per Basham:

All told, it was a pretty routine effort from the top prospect. Not doing the athletic aspects limited the potential downside, and the on-field work looked simple. That's exactly what you expect to see from a player hoping to go inside the top five overall.

The race between him and Cooper is so close that a consensus may not emerge before draft day. White has done nothing to hurt his chances of being the first wideout picked, though. He shouldn't have much trouble making an instant impact in the NFL.
