NFL Rumors: Breaking Down Offseason's Hottest Trade and Free-Agency Discussion

Mike ChiariMar 13, 2015

Many of the top names are already off the market with a few days of NFL free agency in the books, but there remains no shortage of potential impact players available either through trade or signings.

In fact, some of the best values can be had once the initial free-agency firestorm dies down. Teams still have plenty of opportunities to make big improvements ahead of the 2015 campaign, and there is no question that one of the wildest offseasons in recent memory still has at least a few twists and turns left.

As organizations continue to explore their options, here is a rundown of some of the most intriguing trade and free-agency rumors currently making the rounds.

Adrian Peterson

With elite running backs such as LeSean McCoy and DeMarco Murray already changing teams this offseason, it is conceivable that Minnesota Vikings superstar Adrian Peterson could be next.

AP missed all but one game in 2014 due to a child-abuse scandal, but there is no denying his talent. Although it is possible that his days in Minnesota could possibly be numbered, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are reportedly interested in pursuing the soon-to-be-30-year-old veteran.

According to Scout.com's Gil Arcia, the Bucs have "aggressive" plans in place to make a play for the six-time Pro Bowler.

While the Buccaneers' chances of landing Peterson are unclear, NFL.com insider Michael Silver believes he could be had for the right price, per NFL Network on Twitter:

In addition to that, Silver thinks the market for AP is much better than most believed it initially would be due to the recent movement of so many high-profile running backs:

One team that has long been linked to Peterson is the Dallas Cowboys, as reported by ESPN's Outside the Lines, and with Murray deciding to join the Philadelphia Eagles, via ESPN.com's Phil Sheridan, there is a definite opening in the lineup.

Per Mike & Mike on Twitter, ESPN's Adam Schefter feels as though Murray's departure opens the door for a potential Peterson trade:

The Buccaneers and Cowboys may not be on their own, though, as Yahoo.com's Rand Getlin reported that the Arizona Cardinals have been readying for a run at the former 2,000-yard rusher as well:

It remains to be seen what type of form Peterson will be in after essentially missing an entire season, but he is known for defying the odds. He topped 2,000 yards in a season after returning from a torn ACL, so thriving in 2015 could be a walk in the park by comparison.

With that said, Peterson is approaching the magic age of 30 at which many running backs start to break down. There is definite risk involved with giving up a lot to land AP, but the potential reward could be too good to pass up.

Evan Mathis

Peterson may not be the only former Pro Bowler available via trade, as the Eagles may be shopping veteran guard Evan Mathis.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the busy Eagles are actively seeking to deal Mathis despite the fact that he has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons:

Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News backed up the report by revealing that the Eagles are closing in on a trade that would send Mathis out of town:

The Eagles haven't offered any confirmation on that, although head coach Chip Kelly made it clear that everyone on the roster has the potential to be traded, per Eagles Insider on Twitter:

Philadelphia will already have a decidedly new look in 2015, and dealing its starting left guard in Mathis would be yet another significant move.

Mathis has really come into his own since joining the Eagles from the Cincinnati Bengals in 2011, and he has developed into one of the most solid and reliable guards in the NFL.

Although Mathis is starting to get up there in age at 33, he proved last season that he can still play at an extremely high level. That means he should generate some interest—especially since the price to acquire a quality guard via trade doesn't appear to be lofty, as evidenced by the New Orleans Saints dealing Ben Grubbs to the Kansas City Chiefs for a fifth-round pick, via NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal.

Mathis could potentially be had at a bargain price, and he is the type of player who can change the play of an entire offensive line for the better due to his experience and hard-nosed style.

Dwayne Bowe

Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is a few years removed from being one of the NFL's best players at his position, and although he may no longer be in that category, he could turn out to be a quality signing for an organization in need of help at wideout.

After eight mostly productive seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, the 30-year-old pass-catcher was released by the team Thursday, according to NFL.com:

Bowe didn't catch a touchdown in 2014 on 60 receptions for 754 yards, and with the signing of Jeremy Maclin, the Chiefs could no longer afford to pay a premium price for the 2007 first-round selection.

While Bowe has topped 1,000 yards receiving in a season on three occasions, he hasn't accomplished that feat since 2011. Also, even though he has long been heralded as a sure-handed guy, he has struggled in that regard over the past two seasons, per ESPN Stats & Info:

Bowe may well be on the decline, but he can still be a useful commodity in the NFL. According to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler, the Cleveland Browns are of the belief that the veteran receiver can possibly come in and contribute:

The Browns have a dire wide receiver situation with Josh Gordon suspended for the entire 2015 campaign, and they desperately need to find someone who can make some plays in the passing game.

Per Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, Bowe is very much on Cleveland's radar, along with former Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Stevie Johnson:

Bowe is nowhere near as explosive or dynamic as Gordon, but he is a good outside target due to his size. He also has no shortage of experience, which is something the Browns most definitely need in their receiving corps.

Although Bowe isn't likely the type of signing that will push Cleveland into playoff contention, he would certainly fill a major need, and it isn't likely that the Browns will have to break the bank in order to get him.
