Jasper Brinkley to Cowboys: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldMar 12, 2015

The Dallas Cowboys made a notable addition to their linebacker corps on Thursday, signing free agent Jasper Brinkley to a two-year contract.

Todd Archer of ESPN.com reported the news, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.

Brinkley has played his entire career with the Minnesota Vikings, with the exception of a one-year stint in Arizona for the 2013 season. The 29-year-old veteran was a fifth-round pick in 2009 and has carved out a respectable resume to date.

Dallas watched previous captain Justin Durant leave for the Atlanta Falcons on the open market, and it still may lose another linebacker in Rolando McClain, who's also testing free agency.

At least the Cowboys can look forward to welcoming back Sean Lee, whose torn ACL injury in OTAs created opportunities for Durant to have a strong year and for McClain to have a resurgent campaign.

While the position group remains in flux for America's Team—they've also signed Keith Rivers this offseason—Brinkley serves as a solid depth option who started for the majority of his time in Minnesota during 2012 and 2014.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli helped his side of the ball improve this last season—a big reason why Dallas was able to seize the NFC East title. Marinelli will likely be able to find a place for Brinkley to play regardless of how big his role ultimately is.
