Brock Lesnar Retaining World Title at WWE WrestleMania Is Best for Business

Donald WoodMar 13, 2015

Current WWE world heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is one of the most believable titleholders in the history of wrestling, but after such an interesting run with the belt, letting him successfully retain the championship at WrestleMania 31 would be best for business.

Lesnar retaining the title against Roman Reigns would be the ultimate WrestleMania swerve.

First and foremost, a victory for Lesnar would prove WWE was able to re-sign the performer before he jumped ship to the UFC. There have been rumors that the champion would return to MMA following his current deal, according to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, via MMAWeekly.com, but WWE understands his value to the company and must bring the bona fide pay-per-view draw back on a new long-term deal.

The majority of the WWE Universe believes Reigns will walk away with the championship after winning the Royal Rumble and beating Daniel Bryan at Fastlane to guarantee his spot in the main event. Most fans also expected The Undertaker to beat Lesnar last year at WrestleMania, but that turned into one of the biggest swerves in history.

With all signs pointing to a win for Reigns, the champion successfully retaining the title would be the second major swerve involving Lesnar in as many years. The fans would again be in shock, but this time, many would celebrate almost immediately after watching Reigns fall to a beast like Lesnar.

A vocal portion of the fanbase doesn’t believe Reigns deserves to be in the main event of WrestleMania 31. He has struggled on the mic since breaking off on his own and has been carried in many of his singles matches, resulting in backlash against the WWE’s hand-chosen top star.

A loss for Reigns would alleviate the pressure on the younger Superstar. After failing to beat Lesnar, he could take the experience and use it to grow in the ring and as a person. Tasting the glory of main eventing WrestleMania should drive Reigns to improve.

As for Lesnar, retaining the title would continue one of the most dominant runs in wrestling history with a company’s primary title. While he hasn't defended the belt as much as past champions, he has run through all of the competition put in front of him.

The fans can buy Lesnar as champion because they don't have to suspend disbelief to think he is a viable champion. The WWE Universe knows he once held the UFC Heavyweight Championship and was a collegiate wrestling champion, two legitimate physical accomplishments.

Lesnar successfully retaining the title would result in questions about what happens next, but plenty of different creative plans would be entertaining. Wrestling fans have been yearning for a tournament, and that would be a great way to name a No. 1 contender.

The best option would be an eventual match between Lesnar and Bryan. The WWE Universe made its voice heard that Bryan was the right answer to win the Royal Rumble, and the company can accomplish the same goal by allowing the champion to retain through SummerSlam.

At the 2015 edition of SummerSlam, Bryan could pull off the impossible and beat Lesnar for the title. That could lead to several matches between the men or an eventual championship rematch between Lesnar and Bryan at WrestleMania 32.

Regardless of how the company books the title over the coming year, Lesnar re-signing with the WWE and retaining the championship at WrestleMania would be best for business.
