My Ideas for Tweaking the College Football Playoff System

For years, the saying was that people were always talking about college football.  In the 90's the talk became toxic after a string of co-national champions. 

The bowl system was deemed to be too sacred for a complete reformation.

The compromise was the Bowl Championship Series. 

Every year the BCS has been tweaked.  It started with four bowl games.  Now the BCS consists of five bowl games. 

My contention is that when the BCS was first created the tradition of the bowl games became antiquated. 

So here is my idea for a college football playoff system:

Get rid of the preseason polls.  Keep the regular season at 12 games.  When the first BCS poll comes out in October, that will be after a month of the season. Abolish all conference championship games. 

The top four teams in the final BCS poll gets to play for the National Title.  Play all the college bowl games over New Year's weekend, the second week in January is a National Semi-Finals, and the third week in January is the National Championship Game. 

The National Semi-Finals can be alternated between the Orange, Fiesta and the Sugar Bowls. The Rose Bowl will be the National Championship Game. 

The most games any team will play will be 14.  The bowl games will still be there for the majority of the six win college football teams.  You pay homage to the bowl system and you still get a college football playoff. 

If this 14 game system gets instituted, the jump to a 18 game playoff system would simply expand an already successful system.

The BCS, in my opinion, is an important stepping stone toward a real college football playoff. 

The thing about the BCS is that it is a playoff of the top two teams in college football and the debate about whose those two top teams are is becoming toxic.
