Zlatan Ibrahimovic Red Card: Details, Reaction from Chelsea vs. PSG
Zlatan Ibrahimovic dealt Paris Saint-Germain's chances of advancing in the UEFA Champions League a potentially fatal blow by receiving a red card for a rash challenge on Chelsea's Oscar.
The competition's official Twitter feed provided brief details of the incident:
Sky Sports' Twitter account offered a different view of the challenge:
Although Ibrahimovic's decision to leave his feet bordered on idiotic, referee Bjorn Kuipers was quick to brandish a red card. On further review, it looked as though he may have been too quick. PSG players certainly thought so and appeared to feel the antics of Chelsea had contributed to the swift decision.
Upon review, UEFA decided to ban Ibrahimovic for one game, allowing the PSG star to return for the second leg of the quarterfinal tie, via Jonathan Johnson of Bleacher Report.
There's no small amount of irony that Blues gaffer Jose Mourinho had bemoaned what he saw as PSG's overtly physical approach during the first leg before the return match, per the Daily Mirror's Liam Corless. Those comments may have influenced the referee's thinking, inadvertently or otherwise.
Either way, the sending-off is a hammer blow to the Ligue 1 side, who trail their last-16 tie on away goals.
