La Canfora: Saints Actively Shopping Lews

Lewis Expresses Frustration with Saints, Seeking Guaranteed Contract or Trade
Tuesday, March 10
Unrest has begun setting in around the New Orleans Saints after Jimmy Graham was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, per Jay Glazer of Fox Sports. According to Mike Triplett of ESPN, Lewis isn't happy:
It gets worse.
According to Evan Woodbery of NOLA.com, Lewis has now directly stated his desire to leave New Orleans:
""I think it's time for me to take my talent somewhere else," Lewis wrote on his Instagram page. "I only want fairness. I would love to stay and play for my hometown but I only want to be treated fairly."
Lewis has base salaries of $1.8 million, $4.25 million and $4.75 million in the final three years of his contract, and the Saints probably wouldn't be receptive to guaranteeing all $10.8 million of his remaining salary.
"
Lewis appeared in all 16 games for the Saints in 2014, accumulating 41 tackles and two interceptions. He's spent two seasons in New Orleans after spending his first four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, intercepting seven passes in his six-year career.
The 28-year-old has really blossomed in recent years, however, and his loss would really hurt an already-suspect New Orleans defense.
Of course, it's also possible that the Graham trade signals a rebuilding year of sorts for the Saints, and the team might not abide the sort of second-guessing coming from the likes of Lewis. It's just as hard to imagine them guaranteeing his whole contract.
In other words, look for the Saints to either soothe Lewis' concerns or cut him. The latter isn't ideal, but it appears the corner isn't giving them a ton of options at the moment.
