Despite Strong Showing at Pro Day, Brett Hundley Still a Project for NFL Teams

Brent SobleskiMar 10, 2015

UCLA's Brett Hundley has everything a team wants in a quarterback prospect except for the ability to step in from Day 1 and be a starter.

All of the physical tools are present. At 6'3" and 226 pounds with 10-inch hands, the UCLA product claims prototype size. Hundley is also a sensational athlete.

During his combine workout, the three-year starter impressed with his physical skill set. Hundley was a top qualifier in every drill in which he competed at Lucas Oil Stadium. His 4.63-second 40-yard dash was particularly noteworthy.

The former Bruin also decided to throw at the combine and didn't disappoint. Thus, Tuesday's pro day on UCLA's campus was an opportunity to build more positive momentum.

Prior to the pro day, though, Hundley was undercut by UCLA head coach Jim Mora.

"

I think he's ready for the NFL. I don't know that he's ready to go in and start in the NFL. I think if he can find the right situation where he can go in and learn and have a couple years to work on his craft -- because he will work on it, his work ethic is off the charts, character is off the charts -- if he can get himself in the right situation where he's not thrown right into the starting lineup, then I think he can be a very productive NFL player.

"

In today's NFL, teams aren't afforded the luxury of spending a high draft selection on a quarterback and allowing him time to develop.

The turnover rate for coaches and front office personnel is alarming. Hundley is the type of prospect that an organization could be drafting for the next set of coaches.

The primary concern within Hundley's game remains his on-field recognition and ability (or inability) to process information, particularly against pressure.

"Someone will draft him, but I don't think he will ever be a starter," an AFC scout told NFL.com's Lance Zierlein. "He can't read coverages and struggles to process. It is going to take a few years before he looks like a backup in my opinion. He has a long way to go."

Hundley could do nothing to address those issues at the combine or UCLA's pro day. However, he was still capable of impressing teams during his recent workout.

Due to the structure of UCLA's offense, the athletic signal-caller was asked to run when his first read wasn't open or things broke down around him. It's one of the reasons his overall pocket presence is often questioned.

The quarterback decided to improve upon his footwork during pre-draft preparation, and the point of emphasis was obvious during the pro day, according to the Orange County Register's Ryan Kartje:

Hundley remains optimistic after a strong showing this offseason.

While the quarterback didn't set forth any specific expectations when it comes to the NFL draft, he felt that he impressed teams since the 2014 season came to a close, per Kartje:

It's still difficult to project Hundley as a first-round pick based on the lingering concerns about his game, but there are teams that fit the criteria set forth by his head coach that could be interested in him during the following rounds.

One of those teams is the New York Jets, via DraftInsider.net's Tony Pauline:

With Geno Smith already in the fold, the Jets wouldn't need to rush Hundley into the lineup, but he could be a legitimate target for a franchise that isn't settled behind center.

The same applies to the Tennessee Titans, who sent a healthy representation to UCLA's pro day according to NFL.com's Bryan Fischer:

While linking any player to a certain team at this point would be premature, it's worth noting that those two particular teams own top-10 draft picks, yet each could decide to pass on one of the top quarterbacks if they're available.

Hundley may then prove to be a better value in the second round.

The questions still remains: How willing are teams to spend an early-round pick on a player even his coach says isn't ready to start in the NFL?

Hundley has done everything right as he readies himself for the NFL draft. Sometimes that isn't enough as teams go back to the film and question his ability to handle pressure and play from the pocket. All it takes is one team, though, that sees something in the quarterback prospect to select him earlier than expected.
