Cesaro and Tyson Kidd Must Remain Tag Team Champions After WrestleMania 31
Cesaro and Tyson Kidd have turned out to be quite the tag team.
The two men successfully captured the WWE tag titles at Fastlane on February 22, defeating The Usos in nail-biting fashion.
Their rivalry continued the following night when their respective wives, Naomi and Natalya, got involved. During a rematch for the tag titles, Kidd used the ropes for the pin. Naomi (Jey Uso’s wife) knocked Kidd’s feet off the ropes.
Natalya not only knocked Naomi down but also crotched Jey on the top rope, which warranted a disqualification. The Usos won the match but not the titles.
The rivalry with The Usos is far from over and could lead to an unfavorable outcome for the tag team champions.
The Usos have become the face of the tag team division. They are the constants when it comes to the current state of WWE tag teams. Everyone else has either played second fiddle or hasn't lasted very long.
The Usos made their start atop the division in 2013, when they lost in a valiant effort against The Shield (Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns) on the Money In The Bank pre-show.
Since then, the division has gone through numerous changes. Teams broke up, turned on each other or were never seen again. Some did manage to reform, including The Prime Time Players. Regardless, The Usos are the WWE tag team staple.
This doesn’t bode well for the current champs; it's as if they’re on borrowed time.
The current feud with The Usos should lead to WrestleMania, which wouldn't be a bad thing. They’re both talented teams and should be allowed to display their skills, which leads to the query: Who might be on top after the match?
There’s a strong chance The Usos will take the coveted titles back, but this must not happen. Cesaro and Tyson Kidd must remain champions after WrestleMania 31.
Each has the skill set to usher in a new era for the tag team division. They’re a prototypical team: Kidd is the high-flyer, while Cesaro is the strong man.
Both have been underutilized, rarely getting the chance to show off what they can do. Ironically enough, they both got their chances at NXT. Cesaro fought Sami Zayn in a series of matches at NXT. These bouts reminded the WWE Universe what it had in Cesaro. At one point, Kidd was also in contention for the NXT title.
Both were surrounded in a crowded midcard picture, which is why they went after the tag titles in the first place: opportunity.
The division is in flux; in two months, we saw two teams break up: the Rhodes Brothers and the team of Miz and Damien Mizdow. Both teams won tag team gold before Cesaro and Kidd. They even had a stronger bond.
What makes everyone think that won’t happen soon with the current champs?
It’s only been three weeks since Cesaro and Kidd became champions, and it’ll be a month when WrestleMania arrives on March 29. If they lose the titles to The Usos, then the tag team division will still suffer without new teams to redefine it.
Frankly, the smart move for the WWE Creative is to give Cesaro and Tyson Kidd a lengthy reign as the champions.
Teams come and go, as is the trend in professional wrestling, so only time will tell how long Cesaro and Tyson Kidd last.
