Andre Johnson to Colts: Latest Contract Details, Analysis and Reaction

Adam WellsMar 11, 2015

After an incredible 12-year run in Houston, Andre Johnson has found a new home. The 33-year-old wide receiver will play next season with the Indianapolis Colts.

Johnson posted an Instagram photo with his arm around Colts coach Chuck Pagano:

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported the contract is worth $21 million over three years.

He also revealed that the Chargers were a "close second" in terms of landing Johnson:

Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle and Tania Ganguli of ESPN provided reactions to the signing, including from Texans offensive lineman Duane Brown:

In 2014, which was a down year by his standards, Johnson still had 85 receptions for 936 yards and three touchdowns with the Texans. He posted those numbers with a quarterback situation that was in flux.

Johnson doesn't have the burst he once did, but a possession receiver with reliable hands is a valuable asset in the NFL.

Pro Football Focus' free-agent rankings, which had the former All-Pro at No. 21, has this scouting report on Johnson:

"

The highest-graded wide receiver of the PFF era (since 2007), Johnson hits free agency after 12 productive years with the Texans. Though he’s slowed a bit the last two years, he should still have enough left in the tank to provide a valuable move-the-chains option in the short and intermediate range of the field.

"

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora believes Pagano's Miami ties played a large role in Johnson's decision:

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Johnson is the NFL's all-time leader in receptions per game among qualified pass-catchers:

You can skew the numbers to say a lot, but there's no denying that Johnson's reliability is something all 32 teams would love to have.

As long as Johnson is going to be used as a piece of the offensive puzzle instead of the focal point, he's going to keep succeeding going into the twilight of his career.

Johnson has been one of the best in the business since he debuted in 2003, and he will get an opportunity to prove his skeptics wrong next season in Indianapolis with quarterback Andrew Luck
